Director of Enterprise Applications

Location: Any UK Office ( London, Belfast, Edinburgh, Cardiff or Manchester)

Pay band: Starting at£77,031, plus £3,300 London allowance, for those based in the London area only

Role Purpose:

As Director of Enterprise Applications, you will play a pivotal leadership role, designed to spearhead the strategic direction and execution of our enterprise applications portfolio across the global organisation. The purpose of your role will be threefold: to innovate, to integrate, and to optimise application usage to drive operational efficiency and business growth.

You will strategise the development and deployment of enterprise applications, ensuring they align with our global business objectives and technological advancements. You will be responsible for optimising the performance and security of these applications, thereby enhancing business processes and safeguarding critical data.

Collaborating with key stakeholders, you will identify opportunities to leverage applications to improve business outcomes and user experiences. Your deep understanding of digital technologies will be harnessed to innovate scalable solutions that address evolving business needs and market trends.

As a leader, you will mentor a diverse global team of IT professionals, fostering a culture of collaboration, continuous learning, and excellence. Given the global nature of the role, you will navigate the complexities of different regions and cultures, ensuring consistent application standards and practices across all markets.

Role Context:

The Digital and Technology (D&T) team collaborate with other parts of the British Council to foster a digitally enabled, customer centric organisation. The Operations unit is accountable for the continuing delivery of secure, performant enterprise platforms and applications and the connectivity and modern workplace environment to access those platforms. This is achieved through partnerships with external suppliers and delivery through ITIL based processes. The unit is also responsible for transitioning new products and services into the live environment. It interfaces across the Digital and Technology departments, Suppliers and Managed Services.

Main accountabilities include but are not limited to:

Leadership & Management

  • Direct and oversee the Operations application teams, setting clear objectives and KPIs.
  • Foster a collaborative work environment that encourages innovation and continuous learning.
  • Manage recruitment, performance evaluation, and professional development of team members.
  • Ensure adherence to industry best practices and regulatory standards.

Strategy and/or Planning

  • Develop and implement a strategic plan for enterprise applications aligned with the organization's business objectives.
  • Oversee the lifecycle of enterprise applications, from selection to decommissioning.

Relationship and Stakeholder Management

  • Act as the primary point of contact for all matters related to enterprise applications.
  • Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including senior leadership, business units, IT teams, and vendors.

Commercial and/or Financial Management

  • Develop and manage the budget for enterprise applications, ensuring cost-effectiveness and return on investment.
  • Conduct cost-benefit analyses for proposed projects and initiatives.

Service Improvement

  • Monitor the performance and usability of enterprise applications, identifying areas for improvement.
  • Implement service improvement initiatives based on feedback from users and performance metrics.

Professional Services Expertise

  • Demonstrate expertise in the design, implementation, and management of enterprise applications.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to the application team and other stakeholders.
  • Keep up-to-date with best practices in application management through continuous learning and professional development.

Sector/Subject Expertise

  • Understand the specific needs and challenges of the digital and technology industry and how enterprise applications can address them.
  • Stay informed about industry trends, emerging technologies, and regulatory changes that may impact enterprise applications.
  • Leverage sector knowledge to drive innovation and competitive advantage through enterprise applications.

Consultancy, Analysis, and Problem Solving

  • Provide consultancy to senior leadership and other stakeholders on the strategic use of enterprise applications.
  • Conduct regular analyses of application performance, user satisfaction, and business impact.

Role specific skills:

  • Technical Skills:  Proficiency in managing enterprise applications and understanding their functionalities. Experience with specific enterprise platforms like SAP, Oracle, or Microsoft.
  • Analytical Skills : Ability to analyse business requirements, IT infrastructure, data management processes, and cybersecurity measures.
  • Business Skills:  Understanding of business objectives and ability to align them with enterprise application strategies. Experience in project management, vendor management, and leading cross-functional teams.
  • Communication Skills:  Excellent written and verbal communication skills are crucial for effectively communicating with various stakeholders including IT leadership, business customers, team members, and other IT colleagues.
  • Leadership Skills:  Strong leadership skills with a focus on team development and performance management. The ability to lead change management and strategy building for accelerating digital transformation is essential.
  • Adaptability:  Being adaptable and versatile with the ability to keep up to date with consumer and marketing trends and advancements in technology is key for this role.
  • Understanding of Digital Practices:  An excellent understanding of digital practices such as SEO, SEM, SMO, and PPC will be beneficial for this role.

Role specific knowledge and experience:

  • Extensive experience (8+ years) in managing enterprise applications within a global setting.
  • Proven track record in developing and implementing strategic plans for enterprise applications that align with business objectives.
  • Extensive experience in managing cross-functional teams and leading them towards achieving organizational goals.
  • Deep understanding of various enterprise applications and their functionalities, including CRM, ERP, and SCM systems.
  • Strong technical acumen with a solid understanding of software development processes, data management, IT infrastructure, and cybersecurity.
  • Experience in vendor management, contract negotiation, and managing relationships with external IT service providers.
  • Proficiency in project management, with a proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and deliver on time and within budget.
  • Strong leadership skills with a focus on team development and performance management.
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills, with experience in collaborating with senior leadership, business unit heads, and end users.
  • Knowledge of regulatory standards and compliance requirements related to enterprise applications.
  • Experience in implementing cloud-based enterprise solutions.
  • Familiarity with emerging technologies such as AI, machine learning, and blockchain, and their application in enterprise systems.
  • Understanding of the specific challenges and opportunities within the public sector, particularly in relation to digital transformation initiatives

Education:

  • A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field or equivalent experience.
  • An advanced degree such as a Master's in Business Administration or Information Technology is preferred.

Professional Qualification and Certification:

Minimum

  • Certifications related to enterprise applications management, such as Certified Business Analysis Professional (CBAP) or Project Management Professional (PMP).
  • Certifications related to enterprise applications management, such as Certified Business Analysis Professional (CBAP) or Project Management Professional (PMP).
  • Qualifications in specific enterprise platforms like SAP, Oracle, or Microsoft can also be advantageous.
  • Qualifications in leadership or management could also be beneficial.
