Office 1 Edinburgh

Position type 1 Full Time

Summary 1

We are Eversheds Sutherland, a global law firm, with 5,000+ colleagues in more than 30 countries. We’re full service with deep niche and sector experience. Whatever challenge, wherever in the world, we’re equipped and ready to meet it. We live our values, we’re purposeful and purpose-led. So although the world is fast-moving and rapidly changing, we see it as a place where everyone can thrive. We’re ambitious for our clients, our communities – and for you. Whether you’re starting out on your career or well established, whether you’re a lawyer or in business services. If you’re looking for what’s next, we are too.

What to expect

As a lawyer, you enjoy a variety of work: regional to international and across practice groups. With us, you grow your global mindset. You’re encouraged to put ideas into action and there’s always something new and different to get involved in. We see the fast-moving world as a place where we can all thrive and succeed. We’re excited for what’s next, so with us, you can be too.

Our team

The financial services team within Eversheds Sutherland combines firms which have been at the forefront of regulatory and tax interpretation and product development for the fund management industry since the 1960s. We have helped fund managers and general partners (GPs) to launch thousands of funds and to market them compliantly into over 100 countries. We have extensive experience of setting up funds in many countries to invest in a wide range of asset classes including publicly traded securities, fixed income, direct private equity investments, private equity funds, hedge fund strategies, infrastructure structured products, renewables, private debt, real estate and timberland.

Due to our continued growth, we are recruiting an Associate to join our Edinburgh team.

They will have exposure to high quality work and the opportunity to develop their skills further, learning from direct experience but supported by partners and senior lawyers. The continued success of the team creates real opportunities for merit-based promotion.

Role and key responsibilities

We are looking for a talented lawyer to join our Financial Services team in Edinburgh.

While the role is located in Edinburgh, with a focus on growing the practice from the Eversheds Sutherland’s Edinburgh office, the role supports the London based Financial Services team and will involve a mix of “City”, international and Scottish work.

As an integral part of our Financial Services team you will provide advice to clients and colleagues and undertake or provide support on a wide variety of transactions. The clients include asset managers, depositaries, wealth managers, administrators, insurance companies, banking and other financial institutions, pension funds and family offices. As an integral part of our Financial Services team you will have opportunities to be involved in a number of client relationships (in many cases having daily day to day contact) with opportunities for secondment.

There will be a focus on establishing and supporting alternative investment funds, structured primarily as closed-end funds and limited partnerships, as well as advising on various contracts particular to the asset management industry and associated regulation.

Skills and experience

We are seeking applications from Lawyers with 0-3 years post qualification experience. Ideally you will have experience with a financial services/asset management team. Although associates with corporate/commercial experience that are keen to move into the asset management sector may also be of interest.

Ideally the successful candidate will also be able to demonstrate the following skills:

  • Demonstrates skill and competence on transactional work and advising on commercial contracts.
  • Has some awareness of financial services regulation.
  • Has the ability to take into consideration the commercial impact of advice when applying technical expertise to decisions.
  • Demonstrates good networking skills and an ability to build strong client relationships.
  • Maintains a breadth of view despite specialisation.
  • Has a commitment of delivering quality client service.
  • Maintains an ability to manage a heavy workload and the competing demands of clients which arise from running a number of separate transactions at once
  • Demonstrates initiative and an ability to take ownership for own workload
  • Builds great relationships with colleagues within the team and in other areas
  • Demonstrates an ability to work as an integral part of a team
  • Has a keen sense of drive and enthusiasm for the role
  • Has a willingness to stay on top of legal and regulatory developments and works with the team on briefings and other know-how projects
  • Interested to work with London-based and International clients
