Plymouth Marine Laboratory 3D Coastal and Ocean Modeling Research Scientist
Our mission is to promote greater fundamental understanding of marine systems by developing and applying state-of-the-art computational models.
These models simulate marine system functioning and its response to local and global pressures. We use this understanding to promote sustainable use of marine ecosystems, addressing many of the UN sustainable development goals and contributing to IPCC reporting. We take an “ecosystem” approach, integrating oceanography, marine physics, chemistry, biology, and their interactions across the water column, sediments and land and atmospheric interfaces. We integrate models with data from laboratory experiments, in situ and remotely sensed marine observations to test hypotheses, validate simulations, sustain monitoring, deliver long-term (re)analysis of ocean biogeochemistry, and improve forecasts. Our whole systems approach provides an unrivalled ability to understand the marine system and improve predictions of change in the ocean state, ecological functioning, and ecosystem services. An important focus is strategic research conducted through the National Centre of Earth Observation (NCEO) where PML (Plymouth Marine Laboratory) scientists play an active, long-term role in environmental science using satellite data.
PML’s Marine Systems Modelling Group seeks a talented and enthusiastic 3D coupled marine system modeler to join our team based in Plymouth. You will explore the interactions between ecosystem processes, climate change and other anthropogenic drivers by developing, applying, and interpreting a range of shelf and global coupled ecosystem-hydrodynamic models. The work relates to multiple large national and international projects (e.g., Mission Atlantic , FOCUS , NECCTON ), and will provide an outstanding opportunity for the successful candidate to build or extend their network of collaborators both within the UK and across Europe.
The successful candidate will be expected to develop their own scientific research directions in this context and, in time, develop new projects and seek funding.
The successful candidate will have significant experience in numerical coastal ocean modelling, including 3D hydrodynamic models such as NEMO and biogeochemical-ecosystem models such as ERSEM. They will be skilled at using model analysis software (e.g., python or matlab). They will have a good journal publication track record appropriate to career stage and knowledge of ocean physics, biogeochemical and/or ecosystem process. D. in a relevant numerate environmental science discipline or hold equivalent research track record and a strong 1st degree in numerate science, engineering, or mathematics.
At a Senior scientist level, a proven track record of significant grant capture and a wide range of collaborations is expected.
