Job Title: Lead Structural Engineer

We have recently gained permission to begin the design work to build a modern, low carbon waste water treatment plant to provide vital services for the community and environment which will recycle water and nutrients, produce green energy and help Greater Cambridge to grow sustainably. Known as the Cambridge Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) Relocation Project, Anglian Water will work with our partners, MMB, MWH and Skanska to help deliver this fantastic opportunity for the Greater Cambridgeshire area. The relocation would make the site of the existing WWTP available to form part of the development of a new low-carbon city district, known as North East Cambridge. The site at Cowley Road, is Cambridge's last major brownfield site, and the wider North East Cambridge district proposals envisage creating around 8,350 homes and 15,000 jobs over the next 20 years. To ensure this exciting and community changing project is implemented with industry-leading and safe engineering technical direction, we are looking for a Lead Structural Engineer to join us on this journey to oversee our structural design deliverables

What will you be doing as our new Lead Structural Engineer?

Playing a key role in our flagship project at outline status, you'll lead discipline engineers in wastewater recycling and sludge treatment centres ensuring all designs are fit for purpose and meet current legislation and standards. Whilst leading and coaching a team of less experienced members of the Structural Engineering team, you'll pass on your best practice of engineering principles and stakeholder management and drive a continuous improvement culture amongst the team to keep pushing innovation for technical excellence.

Key responsibilities:
  1. Engineering leadership: Work closely with the Technical Managers and Senior Design Manager to continually assess project delivery, safety and designs and implement technologically driven improvements where possible to outperform where possible. Lead the structural design delivery for Cambridge Relocation Project.
  2. Health & Safety: Drive excellence in Health & Safety in design to eliminate risks and keep all concerned safe. Ensure designs comply with structural, water industry and Anglian Water standards and regulations.
  3. Design planning: Assist with the development of the design resource strategy for the structural discipline, plan and allocate resources on a best for task basis.
  4. Collaboration/ stakeholder management: Work effectively as a multi-discipline project team with internal and external stakeholders and take responsibility for activities relating to Structural Engineering to drive project delivery.
  5. People/ team development: Provide clear, visible and consistent leadership where a developing and supportive culture is created for team members to enhance their skill set which in turn will enhance the team's performance.
  6. Transformation: Lead a culture that promotes the team to try new things and deliberately deliver differently by engaging with internal and external groups.

A little bit about your skills, experience and behaviours…

  • An engineering, or equivalent, degree or be able to demonstrate a degree level of knowledge through relevant experience.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of all relevant standards, regulations and codes of practice.
  • Demonstrate a level of competence in practical structural design experience within the water/wastewater industry environment.
  • Proven record of delivering design projects to program, budget, and quality requirements, and managing competing tensions whilst meeting safety standards.
  • An experienced leader of people who is comfortable developing team members.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to form long-lasting and trusted relationships and gain buy-in where required to drive delivery.
  • A high level of resilience to overcome setbacks and provide solutions.
