Main purpose of the role:
To develop and operate rule-based simulation and analysis tools and templates which, through their execution, provide feedback to the design of electric powertrain systems, either internally or to meet project or customer requirements.
The candidate:
We are looking for multiple candidates and will consider applications for junior, senior, and principal positions.
Key responsibilities:
- To develop electro-magnetic and wider electric powertrain tools and templates which will be applied within the simulation/analysis group as well as the wider Design and Analysis and Test and Development functions.
- To collaborate with your peers, the Design and Analysis Manager, Development Manager, Chief Engineers and Technologists, Chief Technical Officer and Directors in the creation of simulation and analysis tools and templates.
- To assess simulation/analysis scope from customer’s requirements and provide technical input to agree the requirements with senior managers and/or chief engineers.
- To analyse electro-magnetic designs using various analysis tools, templates and techniques to meet customer or internal requirements.
- To understand and use first principles engineering to provide calculations to qualify more sophisticated analyses.
- To interpret electro-magnetic analysis results and provide design direction where necessary supported by analysis reports.
- To chair technical meetings with customers and to ensure all due customer-facing actions are completed.
- To support less experienced analysis engineers.
- To support the Business Development team in seeking out new business and marketing opportunities.
- To write reports, documentation and present data at all levels across the organisation.
- To interface directly with clients on technical issues when required.
- To create analysis proposals for prospective customers detailing workscope, deliverables and required resources.
- To work with the Design and Analysis Manager, supporting resource management within the simulation and analysis team.
- Any other tasks that are reasonably assigned to you by your line manager, including development activities, which are within your capability and grade.
Required Education & Experience:
- BEng or BSc in automotive/ mechanical/ aerospace/ electromagnetics/ power electronics engineering.
- Knowledge of product, system and component analysis for the delivery of projects.
- Experience of electric machine design and the use of relevant EM simulation software.
- Knowledge of materials and their properties and their use in engineering design and analysis.
- Delivery of EM simulation work within industrial projects; within automotive, and aerospace environments.
- Broad experience of mechanical systems and their responses.
- Experience in automotive/ motorsport/ aerospace.
- Hand calculations.
- EM design of electric machines using proprietary and commercial software packages.
- First principles analysis of electric machines.
Desirable Education & Experience:
- MEng/ MSc Degree.
- Modelling using 3DEXPERIENCE and/or Catia V5.
- Experience in using MotorCAD and/or other 2D or 3D EM FEA packages.
- Ability to automate workflows to support operational mapping analysis and parametric analysis of designs.
- Basic experience in python and/or VBA.
- Experience of software systems such as Matlab/Simulink or similar.
- Experience in a consulting environment working on diverse and complex design/analysis projects.
- Expert knowledge, such as vibration, thermal, composite materials, NVH for electric machines, or other relevant fields.
