United Kingdom Anglo American plc Full time

Company Description

Anglo American is a leading global mining company, and our products are the essential ingredients in almost every aspect of modern life. Our portfolio of world-class competitive mining operations and undeveloped resources provides the metals and minerals that enable a cleaner, greener, more sustainable world and that meet the fast-growing consumer-driven demands of the world’s developed and maturing economies.

We are constructing a state-of-the-art underground mine to enable the extraction of Polyhalite – a unique multi-nutrient fertiliser – along with the necessary infrastructure both above and below ground that will be required for transport, processing, and distribution.

POLY4 is our flagship multi-nutrient fertiliser product. Made from polyhalite, it contains four of the six macro-nutrients and many micronutrients that are essential to plant growth. It allows farmers to maximise their crop yield, increase quality and improve soil structure with one simple product.

Job Description

Join us as a Hydrogeologist where you will contribute key operational and technical skills to all groundwater management solutions, focused initially on shaft sinking, to address water ingress challenges in line with the plans of the broader operation/site.

Your Key Accountabilities will include;

  • To provide technical input into the mine water management strategy in collaboration with other stakeholders.
  • Plan, scope, design and supervise hydrogeological fieldwork and assessments, including drilling, hydraulic testing (packer, spinner logging, airlift, injection), downhole geophysics and wireline piezometers, recommendations for shaft depressurisation and dewatering design.
  • Manage subsequent hydrogeological data compilation, analysis and reporting, relating initially to shaft sinking and then into operations.
  • Participate in detailed analysis and interpretation of the relevant data to inform dewatering and ground water flow control and mitigation measures.
  • Identify and propose new opportunities to add value through hydrogeological characterisation.
  • Dewatering implementation as required during shaft construction and operations.
  • Optimise hydrogeological data collection from existing drilling campaigns through collaboration with geological disciplines.
  • Support planning and design groundwater quality and level monitoring programmes.
  • Scoping and evaluation of external proposals and subcontractor management.
  • Communicate all key hydrogeological information to the mine geosciences / mining / environmental leadership teams.
  • Ensure control and oversight over hydrogeological data collection, flow of data into an integrated data environment and ensuing interpretation.
  • Comprehensive hydrogeological input into strategic and short-term planning, including relevant water data to daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual reporting processes.
  • Input into Sustainable Mine Plan water targets and environmental hydrogeology as required.
  • Supervise and execute continuous improvement activities related to shaft sinking associated with the Water Management Standard to de-risk the business and achieve a Sustainable Mine Plan and other approved improvement initiative targets.
Qualifications
  • Relevant Degree in Hydrogeology or Geosciences is essential.
  • Post Graduate studies in Hydrogeology or related field is desirable.
  • Civil Engineering and Hydrology would be advantageous.
  • Practical hydrogeology experience within a mining environment.
  • Developing, management and implementation of hydrogeological drilling, testing and mine dewatering design during shaft sinking. Complimented by hydrogeological assessment, understanding of models and wider water management.
  • Conversant with theories and principles governing groundwater mobility and modelling (volume and quality).
  • Understanding of typical corporate water related policies and procedures for managing water use in mining operations.
