The International Education Institute provides four pre-sessional courses for students who use English as an additional language and who have an offer to study at the University.
Pre-sessional courses provide an excellent orientation to the University and enable students to develop:
• language knowledge and academic literacy
• attributes of reflectiveness, criticality, autonomy, confidence and academic integrity
• critical analysis skills and the ability to incorporate sources and evidence in academic work
• knowledge of academic and discipline-specific conventions
• familiarity with institutional services, processes, and forms of assessment.
We are looking for three experienced associate lecturers to join our small team.
• Small group teaching
• A revised pre-sessional curriculum with an increased focus on genre-based pedagogy
• Supported by an experienced Director of Pre-sessional, including paid induction and regular classroom observations and feedback
• The chance to spend summer in one of the UK’s most popular seaside tourist towns.
Applications are invited for the 4-week pre-sessional, running August 8th to September 5th.
To allow time for settling in and induction, contracts run from August 5th to September 5th, inclusive, with the expectation of being available on campus throughout.
Rates of pay are competitive at point 34 of the scale (currently £41,732 pro rata), plus holiday pay in lieu of time off. En-suite accommodation is available on campus for a subsidised rate, which can be repaid to the Institute after payroll.
Please note that sponsorship is not available for this post; you must have the right to work in the UK and be physically present in the UK for the duration of the role, including induction. Successful applicants will be required to provide evidence of their right to work, national insurance number, and a UK bank account.
Applicants must have a relevant masters degree (education, applied linguistics, TESOL, etc.) and preferably a teaching qualification and previous pre-sessional or HE teaching experience.
Representative work activities / responsibilities
Deliver lectures with specified learning outcomes within a clear and established teaching programme /framework.
Carry out the necessary preparation for each lecture eg attending module meetings, write lectures, preparing lecture notes and additional teaching material (such as handouts), organising AV equipment etc.
Ensure that the learning objectives and the learning need of students are met by the teaching content, methods of delivery and learning materials.
Engage the interest and enthusiasm of students and inspire them to learn by challenging thinking, fostering debate and developing the ability of students to engage in critical discourse and rational thinking.
Promote and further students’ understanding of the subject matter by transferring knowledge in the form of practical skills, methods and techniques.
May be required to undertake marking of coursework and assignments and provide appropriate feedback to students.
Knowledge, skills and experience
Essential
Degree in relevant subject
Ability to communicate effectively and explain concepts and theories in a clear and understandable manner to a range of abilities
Experience of applying relevant pedagogical methods and techniques
Desirable
Hold, or be near completion, of a relevant doctorate
Advance HE Fellow status
Teaching qualification
Engaged in continuous professional development

Job Salary & Benefits
