Engineering Apprentice Technician

United Kingdom Women's Engineering Society Full time

The Technician Apprenticeship Scheme is a four-year training programme and combines on-the-job training with academic study. It is an entry-level scheme aimed at those with an interest in engineering and its application. Our apprentices specialise in either Mechanical or Electronic Engineering.

There are two options to chose from which will be discussed at Interview with you, Mechanical and Electronic pathways.

Technician Apprenticeship Scheme: Mechanical Engineering Pathway

Mechanical Engineering apprentices will learn first-hand the skills required to develop into a fully qualified Mechanical Engineering Technician.

Technician Apprenticeship Scheme: Electronic Engineering Pathway

Electronic Engineering apprentices will learn first-hand the skills required to develop into a fully qualified Electronic Engineering Technician.

Apprentices will spend their first year studying full-time at Kingston College, where they will work towards a level 2 qualification* in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering. They will then undertake a series of six-month placements across a selection of Imperial’s busy workshops in South Kensington (including Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Civil Engineering and Materials), gaining experience across a wide range of technical skills and challenges. In addition to the workshop rotations, apprentices will continue to work towards a range of formal qualifications as part of a weekly day release to Kingston College.

This programme is aligned to the Engineering Technician Apprenticeship Standard (Toolmaker and Tool and Die Maintenance Technician) and qualifications include a level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Competence) – Toolmaker, Tool and Die Maintenance and a level 4 Higher National Certificate.

Key Training Areas:

  • Workshop techniques including an introduction to CNC machining
  • An introduction to design using a proprietary CAD package
  • Prototyping
  • Use of precision measuring/testing equipment
  • Alternative materials and their uses
  • Safety and its role in the workplace

Please note that:

  • This is not an Undergraduate degree programme at Imperial College London; apprentices are members of College technical staff rather than students.
  • Individuals who already have a degree-level qualification in a related subject area are unlikely to attract apprenticeship levy funding, which prohibits the use of Government funds to repeat prior learning, and as such are ineligible for this apprenticeship.

Duties and responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

The responsibilities of the post will vary in accordance with the department within which the apprentice is placed. The following responsibilities are indicative:

  • To attend and successfully complete all requirements of the programme of off-the-job training delivered by Kingston College.
  • To undertake tasks and duties assigned by the technician tutors to develop technical expertise and skills, keeping an up-to-date learning log.
  • To learn about and comply with all aspects of workshop health and safety.
  • To be proactive in progressing personal development, making best use of time on the Scheme.
  • Applicants should possess (or expect to gain) grade 9 – 6 (A*- B) at GCSE level (or equivalent) in Maths and Science.
  • Applicants should possess (or expect to gain) grade 9 – 4 (A*- C) at GCSE level (or equivalent) in English.
  • Practical evidence of an interest in mechanical engineering and an aptitude for its application, this might include school or home projects.
  • A basic understanding of Health & Safety in a workshop or laboratory.
  • Good communication skills, including the ability to work well with others.
  • Effective personal organisation and time management skills.
  • Willingness to undertake training to improve skills and to commit to a four-year programme of study.
