This role provides all aspects of orthoptic care to the community of County Durham. The postholder will be involved with managing their own caseload of adult and paediatric patients. There is involvement in multidisciplinary clinics working in a Orthoptic and optometry clinic to manage patients both new and review and the ability to be involved with Paediatric and adult ocular motlity clinic working directly with the paediatric Consultant ophthalmologist. Although the base for this role is University Hospital of North Durham there will be travel to other sites within the Trust to provide clinics closer to home for patients and work in other main sites. This is a excellent opportunity to work with patients of all ages and abilities in different clinic settings and types We would be willing to support a newly qualified Orthoptist to take up this role.
All aspects of both paediatric and adult orthoptic assessments and management including secondary screening and pre-op and post-op assessments for strabismus / ocular motility.
We provide hospital services from two acute sites - Darlington Memorial Hospital and University Hospital of North Durham. We have a centre for planned care in Bishop Auckland and provide care from community hospitals in Chester-le-Street, Shotley Bridge, Barnard Castle, Sedgefield and Weardale as well as over 80 other community based settings and providing care in patients' homes.

This job involves a varied selection of clinics including single handed orthoptic clinics for mixed adult and paediatric caseload of patients with all levels of abilities, Orthoptic and optometry dual clinics for new and review patients, orthoptic secondary screening clinics and multidisciplinary clinics with the paediatric ophthalmologist which also involves adult motility cases. The post holder will need to travel to sites other than their nominal base to undertake these clinics. There will be a need to perform Orthoptic pre-operative and post-operative assessments for both paediatric and adults cases. As one site has an urgent eye care clinic it will be necessary to perform orthoptic assessments for urgent patients from this clinic to aid with diagnosis and symptom management.
