Laboratory Technician - Anatomical Pathology and Specimen Triage

VCS Foundation, trading as the Australian Centre for Cervical Cancer Prevention, is a not-for-profit organisation drawing on over 50 years of expertise in cancer prevention through pathology services, cancer screening and vaccination registries. VCS Foundation has helped to reduce the mortality rate from cervical cancer in Victoria to half that of the rest of Australia. Our purposed aligns with the World Health Organization's Call to Action to eliminate cervical cancer for all women.
We are seeking either a full time or two part time Laboratory Technicians for the performance of duties within VCS Pathology Anatomical Pathology and Specimen Triage work areas. Following documented policies and procedures, the major activities of the role will include:
• Perform the daily operations of all areas of the Cytology and Histology Laboratory, as trained and authorised.
• Perform all cytopreparatory and histology procedures, as trained and authorised
• Performing general laboratory housekeeping and cleaning.
• Receive, identify and triage all specimens delivered to VCS Pathology by mail or courier.
• Prepare samples including ThinPrep, Histology, swabs and conventional slides for laboratory processing.
• Resolve specimen queries in consultation with the Senior Scientists Team.
• Identify and triage complex specimens in consultation with the Senior Scientists Team (i.e. Supervising students and visitors within the Cytology and Histology Laboratory.
• As instructed by the Director and Supervisor – Cytology and Histology, provide technical training for students and staff within the Cytology and Histology Laboratory.
• Monitor and observe safe work practices in the laboratory and Specimen Triage area.
• Perform and monitor suitable internal quality control measures for Cytology and Histology Laboratory procedures.
• Perform and monitor suitable external quality control measures as required for Cytology and Histology Laboratory procedures.
• Store post-preparation specimens, slides and histology blocks in compliance with NPAAC requirements.
• Assist in the monitoring and ensure the safe handling and disposal of dangerous and biohazardous waste material from the Cytology and Histology Laboratory.
• Assist in the monitoring of stock levels and ordering of consumables.
• Participate in special projects.
• Completed or is progressing towards a Bachelor of Science or related discipline, is preferrable but not essential. Full training will be provided to the right applicant.
• Strong oral and written communication skills and good telephone manner
• Experience in a general medical or pathology laboratory or equivalent.
• Flexible and pro-active approach to work.
• Familiarity with pathology laboratory regulatory provisions, NPAAC and NATA.
• Knowledge of HS&E requirements for medical laboratories.
