Engineer/Physicist – New Technologies
Wayland Additive is a cutting-edge Additive Manufacturing (AM) company focused on developing advanced metal 3D printing technologies. Our innovative and patented NeuBeam process enables the production of complex metal parts, particularly in high performing novel materials. As a Engineer/Physicist in the New Technologies Team at Wayland Additive, you will play a key role in developing our Calibur AM platform and its NeuBeam process. You will primarily work on advancing the plasma technology at the core of Wayland’s NeuBeam Active Charge Neutralisation system. You will also aid in the development and implementation of innovative new technologies and processes for Wayland’s Calibur3 AM system. The role requires close collaboration with academic and industry partners, working on externally funded projects aimed at both advancing our technology and enhancing our understanding of the physics of the NeuBeam AM process. While appropriate experience is highly desirable, even more important is an aptitude and mindset for innovation; Technology Development: Continued development of the NeuBeam Active Charge Neutralisation system – focused on both the existing Calibur3 plasma technology and the next generation upgrades. Development of innovative new technologies to enhance those currently provided by the Calibur AM system.
# Innovation and technology development through ‘hands-on’ experimental and applied working practices – utilising both R&D test bed vacuum systems, scientific measurement equipment and the Calibur AM production system.
# Generation of records and reports of development progress, testing and system capabilities, for dissemination internal to Wayland and as part of the reporting requirements for externally funded development projects.
# Liaise with the wider Wayland Engineering and R&D teams to develop the capabilities of the Calibur AM system. Liaise with industry and academic partners on externally funded technology development projects, and support your colleagues in the successful delivery of the project goals. Aid in the generation of applications for new funded technology and process development projects.

Bachelor's or undergraduate Master’s degree in Physics, Engineering, Chemistry, or a related field. Postgraduate Advanced degree (Ph.Applied ‘hands-on’ experimental development experience in fields and technologies including any or multiple of the following:


vacuum equipment and technology;
charge particle physics;
plasma physics or atomic physics;
An understanding of the requirements of technology development in a commercially focused environment and a strong drive to apply your knowledge and experience to a real world application.


~ Strong technical aptitude and the ability to understand complex physics, scientific and engineering concepts and systems.


~ Programming experience in relevant languages (Python, LabVIEW, MATLAB).


~ Experience of data analysis techniques and software (MATLAB, Python, Julia, etc), and with the generation of project specifications, reports and presentations.


~ Strong mathematical ability and experience of applying this in an engineering or technology development environment.
