Job Description We are recruiting for a Head of Health, Safety & Security to direct, lead, manage and develop Health, Safety and Security across P&O Ferries Division Holdings (Group) that reduces incidents, drives continuous improvement and mitigates operational risks. others. The role will require travel to P&O Ferries ports and vessels. About The Role The role is responsible for Health, Safety and Security (HSS) and is accountable to the Director of Corporate Services and the Executive Committee with a dotted line of reporting to the CEO and the DP World Group Vice President of Health Safety and Environment (GHSE or DPW Group HSE) for all matters relating to health, safety and security of employees, contractors, assets and those affected by the company’s operations.

As the most senior professionally qualified HSS professional in the business, set a personal example at all times and in all business settings. Be the leading advocate for health, safety and security with visible and active leadership.

In particular the Head of Health, Safety and Security will hold the following responsibilities:

  • Health & Safety
    • Drive continual HSS improvement at all locations through the identification and development of programs, standards, training, and best practices, and advising on training for employees and contractors in all departments.
    • Establish and lead corrective action program(s) to mitigate identified high risk operations by determining the needed course of action and working directly with the business location in implementation of the required risk reduction controls.
    • Maintaining oversight of the safe operation of the P&O Ferries operated fleet via the relevant dotted line reports to meet all statutory and company requirements, and helping facilitate them in their responsibility for creating, developing, implementing, monitoring, improving and maintaining Fleet Regulations, Emergency Management Procedures and the Fleet Safety Management Systems.
    • Maintaining oversight of the safe operation of all P&O Ports to meet all statutory and company requirements, through responsibility for creating, developing, implementing, monitoring, improving and maintaining a Port Safety Management System, Emergency Management Procedures with a dotted line reports to enable appropriate co-ordination and sharing of responsibility.
    • Maintaining oversight of the safe operation of the P&O Ferries chartered fleet to assure safe operations in support of obligations within the charter party, through monitoring, improving and maintaining charter party requirements via interactions with Maritime Operations team members.
    • Maintaining oversight of the safe operation of P&O Ferries’ operations in terms of Food Safety & Hygiene to meet all statutory and company requirements, through responsibility for creating, developing, implementing, monitoring, improving and maintaining operating Regulations, Safety Management Systems via the Food Safety and Public Health Manager and the relevant On Board Services team managers.
  • Security
    • Maintaining oversight and overall responsibility for the security of operations for P&O Ferries to meet all statutory and company requirements (Flag, Port State and host state), through responsibility for creating, developing, implementing, monitoring, improving and maintaining Regulations, Emergency Management Procedures and Security Systems including via PFSOs, SSOs and liaising with the CSO of Maritime Operations.
  • DP World Reporting & Alignment
    • Develop P&O Ferries long-term strategy for HSS, that is aligned with the minimum requirements of GHSE strategy as the appointed Regional Safety & Environment Advisor (RSEA), act as the accountable person in working with DP World Group HSE in establishing an integrated approach to Safety
    • Execute the DP World GHSE strategy to elevate HSE performance to world-class levels though the development and maintenance of an effective and continuously improving HSE system / program for the organization and its projects
  • People and Stakeholder Engagement
    • Managing 2 x direct reports and 2 x other dotted line reports of the Head of Fleet Safety / Designated Person Ashore / Company Security Officer and Senior HSS Cluster Manager.
    • Prepare and present to their line manager, the board, DP World GHSE VP and the CEO reports encompassing strategic, legal, and statutory HSS reporting and audit updates.

The Person

Knowledge, skills and education – essential

  • Class 1 Certificate of Competence in a Deck or Engineering capacity preferred or a minimum of 10 years’ experience in a senior HSSE management role in a large asset based operational business with multiple operating locations with a preference to ports and maritime industry.
  • Strong leadership skills and ability to actively engage and promote HSS across all parts of the business, from Board room to shop floor and to represent the Company within industry.
  • Strong analytical thinking and attention to detail with the ability to utilise analytical tools and statistics to define strategy and plans for continuous improvement of HSS.
  • High level of skill and experience in investigations.
  • Proven track record in leading, developing and motivating cross functional teams.
  • Recognised industry higher qualifications such as Chartered Membership of IOSH or equivalent.
  • Must hold a Formal HSE qualification, a minimum of Diploma / Degree level, for example: NEBOSH International Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety and or NEBOSH Diploma in Environmental Management.

Knowledge And Skills – Desirable

  • Knowledge of ISPS, Port Facility Security Officer, and Company Security Officer or Ship Security Officer training/experience.
  • Able to deliver organisational change management and culture shift.
  • Able to take account of the views of others but ultimately agree and decide on a way forward.
  • Resource management and the ability to work closely with members of other departments and the Executive.
