Project Engineer – Baggage

As a Project Engineer, focused on the Operations Programme, will ensure optimal development and delivery of Baggage projects at Gatwick Airport ensuring compliance with technical, quality, cost, schedule and business requirements.

Your role is pivotal in leading the design of large, strategically important projects for Gatwick Airport with typical budgets over £25 million, ensuring that design meets projects requirements, whilst achieving real value for money.

This role has involvement in every stage of the project process including ensuring all projects are installed in line with approved designs.

The Role

Reporting into the Programme Design Manager/ Senior Project Engineer, you'll play a key role in the Construction team, responsible for ensuring design meets needs across varied £multi-million projects, including working in defined sub-programmes on complex projects.

Other duties include:

  1. Developing project scope to meet the business needs along with delivering effective design management on individual projects.
  2. Developing the design brief for external design consultants, ensuring that the design contract is implemented and effectively managed through the design process.
  3. Seeking sustainable design solutions to meet project requirements, ensuring implementation of measures (such as energy-efficient design, materials selection, waste reduction, and transportation optimisation) aimed at preventing, reducing and remediating carbon emissions that arise from the construction.
  4. Working with multiple stakeholders to support the successful delivery of projects.
  5. Seeking cost-effective design solutions and managing external design consultants.
  6. Providing technical input to any design changes through the lifecycle of the project.
  7. Undertaking the role of Principal Designer Contact to discharge the duties of Principal Designer (CDM Regulations 2015) with the support of CDM Advisor.

What are we looking for?

The live environment at Gatwick requires all our teams to have a flexible and adaptable approach, with problem-solving skills and an innovative outlook. Involved in projects from inception to completion you'll work alongside multiple stakeholders. In addition, this role requires:

  1. University degree in mechanical or electrical engineering or construction related discipline – or significant experience in lieu of education/qualifications.
  2. Qualifications – Chartered Member of a recognised Engineering Institution is desirable.
  3. Demonstrable knowledge and understanding of technical and regulatory requirements related to mechanical & electrical engineering within a Baggage Handling environment.
  4. Experience in engineering design or design management on baggage handling systems or multidisciplinary projects is highly desirable.
  5. Experience of coordinating design teams and multi-discipline engineering resources with a particular focus on Baggage Engineering, including mechanical, electrical, controls & screening systems is highly desirable.
  6. Knowledge of and experience in baggage design standards is desirable.
  7. Knowledge and understanding of NEC suite of contracts is desirable.
  8. Experience of preparation of Project Manager Instructions and responses to Contractor Claims is desirable.
