Our Veterinary Services Team are experts in animal disease diagnosis and we process over one million animal and material samples each year. Close links with research and development activities within SRUC and in several other academic and research institutions ensure that our UK, EU and international clients benefit from practical support coupled with expert scientific advice.
Our suite of services supports clients like vets, farmers and pharmaceutical companies by providing diagnostic testing for farm livestock and companion animals, as well as specific health schemes, livestock health planning, veterinary CPD courses and external quality assessment schemes.
SRUC is looking to appoint a Research Technician for a fixed term appointment for 3 years, with the possibility for extension. The post will provide technical support to projects in the biomarkers laboratory team.
This technician post will be predominantly based at the King Buildings laboratories. The post holder’s main responsibility will be to assist with the preparation and analysis of samples from on-going experiments, with a focus on molecular biology and microbiology aspects (85% of time). In addition, the post-holder will be expected to assist with student practical and project students (15% of the time). Laboratory Work carried out in accordance to H&S rules and under quality assurance standard QA ISO 9001:2015.Molecular biology-based analysis of samples such as extraction of Nucleic Acids, their analysis via PCR and qPCR, ELISA’s, or gel electrophoresis.
Analysis of microbial fermentation products including e.g. VFA analysis via the use of gas chromatography, enzyme activity via standard biochemical assays.
Preparation of solutions, reagents, stock buffers and media for the maintenance and analyses of experimental samples.
Management, preparation and maintenance of experimental equipment including planning the use of equipment, and co-ordination with other technical/academic staff.
Monitoring the laboratory sample inventory and specialist reagents/consumables and management of consumables stock.
Record and collate experimental data using Excel and other computer programs as appropriate, analysis of standard test results.
Duties will normally be executed within normal office hours but occasional assistance with experiments outwit normal office hours may be required.
