SLR are looking for graduate or project Ornithologists to join our highly successful and expanding ecology team in Scotland. As an ornithologist you will be undertaking field surveys on a wide range of sites, assisting our growing portfolio of renewable energy projects across the North of Scotland region.
We are looking for applicants based in the North of Scotland with a particular interest in those located/willing to locate to the Highland region (ideally, to be based in our new Inverness office).

The role will involve assisting with field surveys and mitigation projects relating to ornithology, however, you may also be involved in a wider range of ecology surveys, including protected mammals, herpetofauna, invertebrate and habitats surveys. You will also be assisting with data input, analysis, research and report writing - gaining experience in renewable energy project delivery.

Assisting with and leading on ornithology surveys, following a range of survey methodologies and techniques.
• Keeping accurate field notes (including in digital format) in accordance with the principles of scientific data collection and handling, recording and storing data effectively.
• Data analysis and presentation, desk-based study and collating relevant available data and drafting baseline technical reports.
• Undertaking other survey types as appropriate to your skill set e.g. water vole and otter, badger, bats, habitats etc.

Due to the nature of client sites and survey types, the position will involve remote working and some out-of-hours work.

A BSc in Ecology, Biological Science or equivalent (MSc desirable).
• Excellent bird identification skills and the ability to demonstrate experience in a range of ornithology survey techniques (e.g. vantage points, moorland breeding birds, raptors).
• An understanding of scientific data collection methods and an aptitude for accurate and clear recording and storage of data.
• Experience of working and navigating safely in remote upland environments, across all seasons.
• A good theoretical grounding in ecology, survey guidance and environmental assessment.
