The RCM are looking to recruit an Orchestra Manager to lead the delivery of the orchestra and large ensemble performance programme. The role is based within the busy Performance & Programming team and involves working closely with students, staff, professors and orchestral musicians. The orchestra and large ensemble programme includes performances by Symphony Orchestra, Philharmonic, Opera orchestra, New Perspectives, Jazz Orchestra, Wind Ensemble and Brass Ensemble. The RCM enjoys close relationships with some of the world’s most celebrated conductors including Sir Antonio Pappano, Sakari Oramo, Martyn Brabbins, Vasily Petrenko, Joana Carneiro and Rafael Payare.

Key duties include:

  • Managing and delivering the RCM’s orchestral and large ensemble performance calendar
  • Managing student placements
  • Engaging preparation conductors and sectional tutors
  • Attending visiting conductors at the RCM
  • Maintaining RCM relationships with professional musicians and orchestras

The successful candidate will have previous experience of working in an orchestral environment, excellent organisation and communication skills and the ability to prioritise a busy workload. They will be required to work proactively and creatively on a large variety of different projects running simultaneously, maintain a high level of attention to detail and have the ability to remain calm under pressure. A strong working knowledge of classical music and associated performance requirements is desirable.

Job Requirements

  • A relevant Higher Education qualification in music performance or equivalent
  • Experience of managing a busy workload
  • A knowledge of classical music, instruments and orchestral practice
  • Experience of advance planning
  • Experience of line management
  • The ability to understand the practical implications of a musical score, particularly with regard to instrumentation and stage layout
  • Exceptional attention to detail
  • Practical experience of stage managing concerts
  • Fluency in Microsoft Office applications (eg. Outlook, Word, Excel) and Google Docs
  • The ability to lead a busy team and remain calm under pressure
  • The ability to work proactively, flexibly and creatively
  • A high level of interpersonal skills
  • A commitment to recognising, valuing and celebrating diversity and to proactively advancing equality and inclusive practice in all areas of College life.
Job Responsibilities

  • Develop and manage the RCM orchestra and large ensemble programme
  • Manage student placements

  • Manage the RCM orchestra and large ensemble external concerts
  • Maintain RCM relationships with relevant professional orchestras
  • Stage management for RCM orchestra and large ensemble performances
  • Module Leader for Level 7 Orchestral Performance
  • Oversee the Leave of Absence procedure for all students excluding vocal & opera
  • Line manage the Concert & Venue Manager, Orchestra Coordinator, and P&P Assistant
