Band 6 Pre-Registration Clinical Scientist (Cytogenetics)


We are looking for a bright and enthusiastic individual to join the Cytogenetics section of the Cytogenetics and Molecular Haematology Department at Barts Health NHS Trust as a Pre-registration Clinical Scientist.


Barts Health is one of the partner Trusts of the North Thames Genomic Laboratory Hub and provides the opportunity for the right candidate train as a Clinical Scientist in cancer genomics. The department has strong links with research and industry and is at the forefront of service development.
The Molecular and Cytogenetics Department operates as part of the Specialist Integrated Haematological Malignancies Diagnostic Service (SIHMDS) providing a comprehensive genomics service to Barts Health NHS Trust and hospitals within the North Thames region. The department works closely with the other disciplines within the SIHMDS including Immunophenotyping, Haematology and Histopathology to offer a fully integrated reporting service. The department is located within state-of-the-art facilities and testing includes genomic analysis of solid tumours and haematological disorders (malignant and non-malignant), minimal residual disease monitoring, chimerism studies, chromosome analysis and FISH.


The post holder must have a degree in a biological science with significant molecular/genetic component and at least 3 years' experience of working in a genomics laboratory. The post-holder will be performing microscopic analysis of G-banded chromosomes and FISH as well as supervising laboratory staff in the role as duty scientist.
The NHS East and South East London Pathology Partnership is an arms-length organisation providing pathology services to Barts Health NHS Trust, Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust. The Pathology Partnership is hosted by Barts Health.


The Pathology Partnership is based on well-established models for pathology networks, with the Royal London Hospital becoming the main hub laboratory for the network and Essential Service Laboratories (ESL) as a minimum at all other Hospital sites.


Pathology is made up of the following services - Blood Sciences including Haematology, Blood Transfusion and Biochemistry Infectious Diseases including Microbiology and Virology Cellular Pathology including Histopathology, non-gynae Cytology and mortuary services Immunology Cytogenetics and Molecular Haematology Immunophenotyping Clinical Transplantation and Retinoblastoma.

Minimum of 3 years' experience in a genetics laboratory
Experience of a variety of cytogenetic techniques including culturing, harvesting, FISH
Experience of karyotyping and/or FISH analysis

Experience of using image capture software for cytogenetic analysis


Awareness of quality management systems and ISO15189 standards
Understanding of wider molecular genetics and associated techniques (e.g. BSc. in genomics/molecular science or equivalent
Registration with the Health Care Professions Council or Academy for Healthcare Science


Competent in genomic laboratory techniques and troubleshooting
Ability to analyse, interpret and present data /results/concepts
Advanced computer skills
Competent in karyotyping and/or FISH analysis of cancer samples


Adaptable, flexible and can deal with highly pressure
