Lead / Principal Software Engineer (PLC) - EV - Oxfordshire - £45k to £80k

One of my key clients is a pioneering leader in the design and manufacture of advanced vehicles, committed to sustainability, innovation, and excellence.

The company is seeking a highly skilled Lead Engineer specializing in PLC application software and systems to join our dynamic team in Oxfordshire. In this role, you will lead the development, implementation, and optimization of PLC-based control systems for our next-generation buses. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to ensure that our products meet the highest standards of safety, reliability, and performance.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Software Development: Lead the design, development, and testing of PLC application software for control systems used in our vehicles, ensuring robustness, efficiency, and compliance with technical specifications.
  • System Integration: Collaborate with electrical, mechanical, and systems engineering teams to integrate PLC-based control systems into vehicle designs, optimizing functionality and performance.
  • PLC Programming: Develop and maintain PLC programs using industry-standard languages (e.g., ladder logic, structured text) to implement control algorithms, logic sequences, and diagnostic routines.
  • HMI Development: Design and develop human-machine interface (HMI) applications for operator control panels, incorporating intuitive user interfaces and real-time monitoring capabilities.
  • Simulation and Testing: Conduct simulations and virtual testing to validate PLC software and system behavior under various operating conditions, identifying and resolving any issues or anomalies.
  • Documentation: Prepare comprehensive documentation, including software requirements specifications, design documents, test plans, and user manuals, to support the development and deployment of PLC applications.
  • Troubleshooting and Debugging: Investigate and troubleshoot software-related issues, utilizing debugging tools and techniques to diagnose root causes and implement effective solutions.
  • Continuous Improvement: Stay abreast of emerging technologies, best practices, and industry trends related to PLC programming and control systems, driving continuous improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Collaboration: Collaborate effectively with internal stakeholders, external suppliers, and customers to gather requirements, solicit feedback, and ensure alignment with project objectives and customer expectations.
  • Quality Assurance: Adhere to rigorous quality standards and processes throughout the software development lifecycle, ensuring compliance with industry regulations, standards, and best practices.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related field; advanced degree preferred.
  • Proven experience in PLC programming and software development, particularly in the automotive or transportation industry.
  • Proficiency in programming languages commonly used in PLC development (e.g., ladder logic, structured text), as well as experience with PLC hardware and software platforms (e.g., Siemens, Allen-Bradley).
  • Strong understanding of control systems theory, including PID control, state machines, and feedback mechanisms.
  • Experience with human-machine interface (HMI) development tools and technologies (e.g., HMI/SCADA software).
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, with the ability to analyze complex systems, identify issues, and implement effective solutions.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate cross-functionally and interact with stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
  • Commitment to quality, safety, and customer satisfaction, with a focus on delivering reliable and high-performance solutions.
  • Proven leadership capabilities, with experience leading technical teams and driving projects to successful completion.
