We're looking for an exceptional Scientific Software Engineer to help us make a difference to our planet.

As our Scientific Software Engineer, the job may be suitable for hybrid working, which is where an employee works part of the week in the office and part of the week from home. This is a voluntary, non-contractual arrangement and the location advertised will be your contractual place of work.

Our opportunity is full time, 37 hours per week, but we would also consider applicants wishing to work a minimum of 22 hours per week and we will also try our best to consider those intending to work a job share. Whilst this is a temporary position for 2 years, there is potential for it to develop into a permanent position.

Your world of expertise

You will develop an excellent understanding of how weather information is used in industry across the surface transport, energy, retail and infrastructure sectors. Your work will combine this with your relevant scientific and technical background to develop and support the next generation of weather forecast services for new and existing Met Office customers, for example in helping rail network operators to run a safe and efficient railway system or supporting the UK's clean energy transition.

Your key duties

  • Design and develop operational data services exploiting cloud computing technologies to efficiently produce forecasts and contribute to setting the strategic direction for production of data services.
  • Support Met Office scientists to develop high-quality code and implementations of their research, lead activities to develop their capabilities.
  • Influence and negotiate with stakeholders to understand their requirements and ensure that forecast services fully meet their needs.
  • Collaborate with a motivated team to deliver projects that solve real world challenges.

As our Scientific Software Engineer, your total reward package will be up to £49,174 annually, which includes:

  • £33,794 base pay
  • An outstanding Civil Service pension, with an average employer contribution of 27%
  • Recruitment Retention Allowance (RRA) you will be paid £2,200 per annum as a market supplement to reflect the demand for your skills. Whilst in post, you will be paid this market driven allowance from April 2024 until September 2025 in your monthly pay
  • Annual Leave starting at 27.5 days (plus Bank Holidays) rising to 32.5 days (plus Bank Holidays) after 5 years and option to buy or sell up to 5 days per year of annual leave

Essential Criteria, skills and experience:

  • Experience and knowledge in a mathematical, physical or computational science or related discipline, equivalent to several years working post-graduate.
  • Software development: Experience of software development in a scientific, engineering or enterprise application and experience of solving complex coding problems in Python.
  • Software quality: Evidence of applying best practice in quality assurance, such as version control, testing, and reviewing.
  • An understanding of the wider context of the capabilities and needs of your working area and evidence of applying this knowledge to influence future work.
  • Evidence of effective written and oral communication skills with the ability to understand user needs and communicate complex scientific and technical information to a range of audiences.
  • Strong team player with the ability to work and collaborate as a dynamic and productive member of a multi-disciplinary team to deliver projects including the provision of technical advice to other team members.
