Teamwork makes the stream work.
Roku is changing how the world watches TV

Roku is the #1 TV streaming platform in the US, and we've set our sights on powering every television in the world. Roku pioneered streaming to the TV. Our mission is to be the TV streaming platform that connects the entire TV ecosystem. We connect consumers to the content they love, enable content publishers to build and monetize large audiences, and provide advertisers unique capabilities to engage consumers.

From your first day at Roku, you'll make a valuable - and valued - contribution. We're a fast-growing public company where no one is a bystander. We offer you the opportunity to delight millions of TV streamers around the world while gaining meaningful experience across a variety of disciplines.

About the role

Roku is seeking experienced Firmware Engineers to apply their expertise to our next generation of compact and efficient Streaming Player devices. Working closely with our SoC vendors, not only will you be able maximise the performance of the players by designing adaptive and optimised power management schemes within challenging system constraints, but you’ll also have opportunities to influence future silicon IP designs too.

We have a large installed base of products used by millions of users worldwide, and this role takes ownership of the performance of these platforms in the field, optimising the customer experience, supporting the launch of new features and OS versions, and evolving our ability for effective continuous development.

We are seeking engineers with extensive experience in embedded Linux, system-on-a-chip (SoC) development and integration with focus on power and thermal management, streaming audio and video technologies, and integration of third-party code. A proven track record of shipping high-quality software on embedded platforms is essential. This is a great role for a senior professional who enjoys a high level of visibility or for someone looking to take that next step up in their career.

What you’ll be doing

Roku OS feature development
Code maintenance and scalability solution design, including helping with factory onboarding
Partner with internal QA and Channel teams
System-on-a-Chip (SoC) integration and board bring-up
Design, implementation and tuning of low-level power management schemes
Third-party API integration
Everything involved in our end-to-end product development and release cycles

We’re excited if you have

5+ years of relevant software development experience
3+ years of experience in SoC power management design and implementation.
In-depth understanding of Linux, tools, libraries and open source development.
Extensive systems programming experience with C++ & C.
Ability to work in both user and kernel space.
Intimate knowledge of media playback engines and streaming protocols.
Proven track record of success with embedded system development projects.
Solid understanding of design for performance and ensure that your code is fast, resource efficient and ultra-reliable.
Demonstrable abilities to dig deep to find solutions to tough problems affecting our users.
Experience of localisation in consumer electronics.
Ability to accurately estimate software tasks and work to schedule.
Thrive in a fast-paced engineering environment.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Bachelors or Master’s in Computer Science, or equivalent engineering experience.

The Roku Culture

Roku is a great place for people who want to work in a fast-paced environment where everyone is focused on the company's success rather than their own. We try to surround ourselves with people who are great at their jobs, who are easy to work with, and who keep their egos in check. We appreciate a sense of humor. We believe a fewer number of very talented folks can do more for less cost than a larger number of less talented teams. We’re independent thinkers with big ideas who act boldly, move fast and accomplish extraordinary things through collaboration and trust. In short, at Roku you'll be part of a company that's changing how the world watches TV.

We have a unique culture that we are proud of. We think of ourselves primarily as problem-solvers, which itself is a two-part idea. We come up with the solution, but the solution isn't real until it is built and delivered to the customer. That penchant for action gives us a pragmatic approach to innovation, one that has served us well since 2002.
