We are looking for experienced and motivated individuals to join our CNS team in 2 new Paediatric Solid Tumour CNS roles. We are looking for full and part time staff for an initial 2 year fixed term contract


Oxford is the Principal Treatment Centre for Children, Teenagers and Young Adults with Cancer who live in the Thames Valley Region. It is supported by a POSCU network comprising of Great Western Hospital, Bucks (High Wycombe and Stoke Mandeville), Royal Berkshire Hospital, Milton Keynes and Wexham Park. Kamrans Ward is a 9 bedded inpatient ward, with a dedicated daycare space based within the Children's Hospital at the John Radcliffe Site.
They will have oversight of all patients diagnosed with solid tumours (excluding brain tumours) to co-ordinate their care with POSCU colleagues as well as external services at supra centres (photon and proton beam therapy, liver and retinoblastoma services). The post holder will provide clinical support and continuity of care to children and support families from diagnosis as part of an multi-disciplinary team and support transitioning patients into the aftercare service.

Decide on and carry out treatment, which may include advice on the prescribing of medicines (if a qualified non-medical prescriber, within their scope of practice), advice patients and related health care professionals on MDT recommendations or referring patients to an appropriate specialist.
Assess individuals, families and populations holistically using a range of different methods, some of which may not be usually exercised by nurses such as Holistic needs assessments, history taking, ordering, and interpreting diagnostic tests or specialist health needs assessments.
Ensure the provision of continuity of care.
Assess and evaluate, with patients and /or carers, the effectiveness of the treatment and care provided and make changes as needed.
Work autonomously within a wider health care team and as a lone practitioner.
Work across professional, organisational and system boundaries and proactively develop and sustain new partnerships and networks to influence and improve health, outcomes, and healthcare delivery systems.

Work clinically to optimise health and wellbeing, demonstrate autonomous decision making related to comprehensive history taking and physical assessment of patients, working within defined protocols and competency frameworks and scope of practice.
Plan, prioritise and manage complete episodes of care, working in partnership with others, delegating and referring as appropriate to optimise health outcomes and resource use, providing direct support to patients and clients.
Use professional judgement in managing complex and unpredictable care events.
Promote a high standard of highly specialist nursing by initiating and coordinating the assessment, planning, delivery, and evaluation of the holistic needs of patients/families through evidence-based practice following agreed policies, protocols, and guidelines.
Practice a high standard of communication including highly sensitive and complex information to develop and sustain partnership working with individuals, groups, communities, and agencies. Maintain adequate patient documentation to NMC requirements for all patients seen and advice given in any practice setting and contribute to clinical activity/data collection as required.

Work collaboratively with colleagues to develop effective documentation, pathways, protocols, and guidelines for care. Contribute to the development of the team and service, to continuously improve patient care.
Participate in implementing national standards and frameworks at a local level.
Network locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally and seek opportunities to develop the specialist role.
Use effective change management skills to initiate and implement service and practice development, making the best use of resources to improve practice and health outcomes.
Participate in the selection, interviewing, appraisal, and professional development of team members.
Maintain involvement and active input in multidisciplinary meetings and appropriate local bodies / forums to contribute to practice and service development.
Develop and maintain strategic relationships with the paediatric oncology service ensuring seamless transition.
Education/Training:


Maintain, advance, and develop personal theoretical knowledge, high standards of clinical competence and professional development through ongoing self-education and attendance at relevant courses of study.
Develop and maintain a peer network of support, information and learning with other nurse specialists at a local and National level.
Contribute to the development and acquisition of specialist nursing knowledge and skills to enhance and extend the practice of other nurses and health care professionals within the service and beyond.
Ensure the provision of specialist expertise, support and education to community staff, schools, employers, and other agencies to facilitate continuity of care to represent the interest of the patients who have completed cancer treatment.
Improving quality and developing practice:


Coordinate and participate in ongoing service review and evaluation, including seeking and monitoring patient experience and outcomes.
Evaluate clinical practice in relation to its evidence base and clinical effectiveness including policy and guidance.
Identify areas of risk and poor quality, and address these through appropriate governance structures and forums.
Have responsibility to ensure annual appraisal, agree objectives which reflect local and national service needs and develop personal development plans.
Develop personal and professional knowledge through critical self-appraisal, clinical supervision, and networking with other health care professionals locally, nationally, and internationally.
Advocate and contribute to a working environment that promotes continuous learning and development, evidence-based practice, and succession planning, as well as identifying learning opportunities at local and national levels.
Ensure statutory and mandatory training updates, as well as role /specialty updates are completed, and necessary records maintained.
Develop links with local basic and translational research staff to support the ongoing investigation into late and long-term effects of cancer treatment.

Postgraduate level study (HEI level 7) or demonstrable post graduate level working evidenced via a continuous professional development portfolio
First level degree (HEI level 6) in nursing, midwifery or equivalent
Registered Non-medical prescriber


Demonstrates Extensive Experience caring for Children and Teenagers with Cancer
Knowledge of the key professional issues and NMC guidelines relating to professional practice.
