United Kingdom Seafood India Full time

Job Purpose
To monitor regulatory developments and reduce the burden of Regulation on industry.

Dimensions

  • Horizon scan for regulatory proposals that could affect the seafood industry.
  • Analyse regulatory proposals using knowledge of industry and legal knowledge to assess potential impact and possible interventions.
  • Maintain regulatory networks with industry and government in the UK for early sight of proposals, discussions on potential impacts of proposals and work to reach a compromise to achieve legislative aims with minimum impact to industry.
  • Active memberships or leadership of UK wide industry or government groups. Present information to these groups to ensure the best outcome for the seafood industry during negotiations to reach compromise on regulatory text, interpretation and enforcement.
  • Keep industry informed of developments and provide seafood specific guides to compliance
  • Ad hoc enquiries

Prinicpal Accountabilities

Responsible for:

  • Identifying and prioritising areas of concern and to plan work necessary.
  • Seafish stakeholder groups, membership, arranging meetings, terms of reference, tasks undertaken by group, agendas and minutes. 

Planning and Organising

Identifies:

  • New issues arising within scope of work stream and personal outputs set by line manager.
  • Internal and external stakeholders needed to collaborate with to resolve issues.

Responsible for managing work priorities, workload and diary commitments.

Decision Making/Use of Judgement

  • Post holder often decides the Seafish position on issues and represents this at external group meetings.
  • Uses judgement to assess whether an issue carries a significant political or financial risk to refer upward.

Essential internal and external work relationships

Internal Work Relationships:

  • To keep informed of the current work of Regulation as well as regulatory developments of interest to other work streams
  • To work with colleagues to resolve regulatory issues.

External Work Relationships:

  • Work with all sectors of the seafood industry. This can be at all levels including Technical Managers, Directors, Chief Executives of businesses and trade bodies.
  • Presentations to ensure industry are informed and their views are taken into account during regulatory negotiations.
  • Liaise with regulators responsible for regulation affecting the seafood industry. This can be at all levels including senior civil servants who are within the UK and EU, MPs and MEPs. Face to face, reports, give presentations to ensure they are informed of the seafood industry view
  • Seek out information from regulators on developments in reputation, and work to find compromise text in regulation and guidance.
  • Active memberships or leadership of UK and EU wide industry or government groups. These groups negotiate and reach compromise on regulatory text, interpretation and enforcement. Present information to these groups to ensure the best outcome for the seafood industry. These groups will include senior civil servants and legislators, senior members of industry bodies and senior seafood business operators, representatives of professional bodies in the UK and EU

Knowledge, skills and experience required
Essential:

  • Graduate or equivalent in a food or regulatory related discipline, such as food science or food technology.
  • Some experience of regulatory affairs or compliance role.
  • Experience of the food industry preferably seafood or other product of animal origin sector is essential.
  • Extensive knowledge of Current food law in the EU and UK and the development process is essential.
  • Able to work with a wide range of stakeholders throughout the supply chain and government
  • Excellent communicator and facilitator of diverse groups.
  • Expert writing skills, to write position papers and formal guidance documents.
  • Organised, able to plan own workload and prioritise work.
  • A proactive, innovative, problem solving nature.
  • Competent IT systems usage.
  • Driving licence.
  • Post graduate qualification a food or regulatory related discipline.
