Group Director for Health, Safety, and Transport

About the Role:

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, this newly created role is pivotal in shaping and defining the Group’s strategy and approach towards health, safety, and transport. You will collaborate closely with key stakeholders to ensure a robust approach that aligns with our risk appetite and remains defensible in the event of incidents. This role will involve liaison with external stakeholders and dotted-line responsibility with the Group Risk and Sustainability Director.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement Group-wide strategies for health, safety, and transport.
  • Cultivate a positive safety culture across all business areas.
  • Ensure policies and procedures are standardised and aligned with regulations.
  • Manage relationships with external stakeholders such as HSE, DVSA, and Transport Commissioners.
  • Define competencies and training requirements for employees.
  • Oversee assurance processes and incident investigations.
  • Evaluate systems and procurement strategies to mitigate risks.
  • Act as a central point of contact for risk-related enquiries.
  • Standardise reporting methodologies and develop Board-level reports.
  • Align transport initiatives with sustainability strategies.

What We’re Looking For:

  • Recognised Health and Safety qualification with relevant professional body membership.
  • Experience in plc corporate environments and rental companies' safety requirements.
  • Knowledge of transport regulations for HGVs and LGVs.
  • Experience in incident investigations and risk management practices.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills.
