Kent, United Kingdom HAYS Full time

Temporary Teacher of Years 7&8 (The Juniors) Sutton Valence is an independent, HMC co-educational day and boarding school situated in the heart of Kent for pupils aged 2-18. At the Senior School, whilst not fiercely selective on entry, its value added statistics are impressive. For those subjects Sutton Valence offers at A Level, the School aims to be in the top 10% nationally for adding value, managing to bring out the academic potential in every pupil. Equally impressive is the breadth of education on offer, which at GCSE is tailored to each pupil’s strengths, recognising that academic achievement is only one measure of
From Year 7 (First Form), all our pupils work on laptops using Microsoft
OneNote which acts as repository for class notes, prep and online textbooks. Pupils also make notes on their devices and store them in OneNote so teachers can mark online using digital ink or recording. Individuality, confidence without arrogance and the strength of character to meet the complexities of modern living with equanimity are the hallmarks of a Sutton Valence pupil. The Senior School’s roll is currently 570 of which 113 are boarders. Class sizes are small and the overall pupil-staff ratio of 9:1 enables Sutton Valence pupils to benefit from the close guidance and individual attention of teachers. The academic staff are all highly-qualified subject specialists with a commitment to continuing professional development.Contained within the 100-acre site, there are dedicated games pitches, an all-weather playing surface, a sports centre, which contains a fitness suite, an all-weather athletics track and field sports arena and an indoor six-lane swimming pool.Sutton Valence Preparatory School occupies its own site in the neighbouring village of Chart Sutton and currently has 285 pupils between the ages of 2 and 11.The PostInitially for one year, a temporary teacher is required from September to teach primarily the Juniors (Year 7 & 8). Due to the ever-increasing interest in joining the School in Year 7, we are looking for a well-qualified and enthusiastic upper prep/primary teacher to fill this role. This can be best summarised as being wider than that of a traditional grammar school, but not as wide as that of a comprehensive school. Consequently, the ability to teach both the most academic and the less able with equal confidence is a primary requirement of the position. The School’s teaching style is very much centred on the pupils and their individual needs, and the successful candidate should be fully committed to this aim. There is flexibility with subject portfolios and there could be a combination of (but not all of) Maths, Science and Humanities as well as possible contributions to IT, Games and PSHE. Outside of the department, there is an expectation for involvement in the School’s varied programme of co-curricular activities. In addition to this, opportunities exist to participate in the coaching of major sports, the Community Service programme, Combined Cadet Force, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme and in our many clubs and activities. The JuniorsWhilst the concept of a Junior house consisting of both First and Second Forms (Year 7 and 8) was only created in 2010, the pastoral care of these year groups has been an integral part of our school since 1576. Our belief in, and passion for, these years are central to all that we do and the Junior team feel privileged to have the opportunity to shape and influence the lives of our youngest pupils. It is very much part of the Senior School, but serves as an interim phase between Prep and Senior School. There are 12 tutor groups, each with approximately 11 pupils from the First and Second Forms and all pupils are also affiliated to one of the four senior houses for house competitions. The ability to develop leadership, broaden friendships and create a diverse community with these mixed tutor groups allows us to create a friendly, vibrant and supportive environment in which the Junior pupils can find their feet and lay the key foundations needed during their first two years at Sutton Valence School. There is close monitoring of academic performance and the physical and emotional wellbeing of all pupils, a varied and specific PSHE and Wellbeing programme to help shape their values and moral compass, opportunities for charity work and leadership. The Junior Curriculum provides a rich and varied academic programme, which is symptomatic of the way in which in we cater to the specific demands of your youngest cohort. Life in the Juniors is busy, full of opportunity and challenge – we want our pupils to be safe, happy and successful and prepared for the challenges that lie ahead in the Third Form.Applicants will be required to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post, including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS), and a declaration of medical fitness. It is an offence to apply for this role if the applicant is barred from engaging in regulated activity relevant to children. The School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. A copy of the School’s Child Protection policy may be found on the School’s website, which all applicants are expected to read prior to interview.Sutton Valence School is an equal-opportunities employer. #
