About us

TORTUS is a London-based start-up founded by a physician and a machine learning engineer, dedicated to developing a next-generation AI co-pilot for physicians. Our mission is to eradicate medical errors within the next ten years by harnessing the latest advancements in Large Language Models (LLMs) and action AI technology. We aim to create true co-working alongside an AI agent, enhancing physician efficiency, safety, and knowledge. We strongly believe that within the next five years, this type of technology will become mandatory in healthcare. Our unique AI agent, 'O.S.L.E.R,' automates time-consuming tasks, aiming to eliminate burnout and human error in medical practice. Tortus is backed by Khosla Ventures and several angel investors, including a former Chair of the NHS. We recently announced a partnership with a world-leading London NHS hospital, deploying our technology in clinical settings as part of a research pilot.

Position Summary

About the role

We are seeking a seasoned and talented Staff Engineer to join our team and play a crucial role in building and enhancing our existing systems. As a Staff Engineer, you will contribute to supporting our rapidly growing clinician user base and driving the development of new features for our product, O.S.L.E.R. In this role, you will:

  1. Lead the development of our multi-platform desktop app (Rust, TypeScript, React) designed for clinicians and hospitals.
  2. Drive the scaling efforts of our backend systems (Node JS / GCP server less infrastructure).
  3. Utilise your Cloud DevOps expertise to optimise and enhance our pipelines.
  4. Contribute significantly to the development and productisation of our Medical LAM (Large Action Model).
  5. Work collaboratively in a supportive and innovative environment.
Compensation

£100k-£120k/yr cash compensation, with a generous equity package.

Ways of working

Full-time, 40hr work week. Every second Friday is an off day. In person, our office is located at Holborn Town Hall, London, UK.

Technical Skills we are looking for

5+ years of professional experience.

Experience in scaling and maintaining software products with large user bases.

Proven experience in developing performant and scalable backend systems.

Experience in front-end web development (we use React + TypeScript).

Cloud DevOps experience, ideally with GCP.

Strong interest and experience in machine learning and AI, particularly with Large Language Models (LLMs).

Proficiency in Rust or strong desire to learn.

A product-focused mindset with empathy for customers and the patients that they help.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Proven track record of effectively collaborating in cross-functional teams.

Strong active listening skills and openness to feedback.

Willingness to continuously learn and adapt in a dynamic startup environment.

Demonstrated passion and proactive attitude toward staying up-to-date with the latest industry trends, research papers, and advancements.
