Workshop Instrument Repair Technician

Instrument Repair Technician Duties will include:

The position will be part of a small team of workshop technicians, repairing electronic instrumentation including research and teaching laboratory equipment, controlled environment cabinets, fixed plant (including autoclaves etc), portable environment monitoring equipment and controlled environment controls and systems.

The role will also require the ability to plan workload, diagnose faults, source parts and undertake repairs of equipment, as well as undertaking critical and informed assessments of the repairs required.

* Working with the Workshop Infrastructure Manager to provide planned preventative maintenance and servicing for the full range of equipment.

* The ability to develop a working knowledge of the equipment and have a proactive fault-finding approach liaising with manufacturers on issues.

* Undertake testing and calibration of electronic control units, sensors and controlled environment cabinet control systems, ensuring the readings provided are accurate and in line with the required tolerances for the research and teaching activities.

* An ability to develop your knowledge and have a good understanding of the tolerances and of how to obtain and maintain accurate control standards will be key.

* Liaising with academic staff, assessing their requirements, translating experimental requirements into a practical and feasible proposed design which is cost effective. (Example, the design, fabrication and modification of lab research and teaching equipment.)

* Use of the departments job reporting system to maintain accurate records of work undertaken, including time spent, materials used and correct charge against cost codes in line with the budgetary requirements.

Instrument Repair Technician Requirements

The right applicant should hold a qualification in one or more of the following areas: Electronics, Electro-Mechanical or Mechatronics, at the minimum level of ONC/HNC/HND level or higher or possess an equivalent relevant qualification together with the related experience in a practical role in a technical or fault-finding environment.

* Have good experience of relevant electrical/electronic skills in a repair and maintenance work environment, including servicing, fault diagnosis and repair and maintenance of equipment.

* Have good communication skills and be able to work and build rapport with colleagues and stakeholders.

* Ideally have a good set of generic technical and engineering skills and have a genuine interest in fault fining and repairing equipment and technology.
