The Role

With the retirement of the current postholder, Tameside Council are looking for a new Assistant Director for Exchequer Services.

Tameside is one of the ten local authorities that make up Greater Manchester. We are nestled between the buzz of Manchester City Centre and the beauty of the Peak District, both on our doorstep.

The role reports to the Director of Resources and is responsible for providing strategic direction and leadership for the Council’s Exchequer Services. Exchequer Services is comprised of Council Tax, Business Rates, Housing Benefits and Transactional Finance.

You will lead the Council’s income collection strategy from the front, ensuring that the monies due to the Council are collected efficiently, effectively and ethically. Part of this will be progressing the functions digital journey – implementing automation and other system improvements to ensure our staff are freed up to drive better outcomes for residents, businesses and stakeholders.

Managing the Council’s Exchequer Services, you will also have the opportunity to join the Council’s Leadership Team and contribute to, and lead, on a wide range of priorities and cross-council initiatives. You will lead a team of around 100 professionals and collaborate closely with the Assistant Director of Finance, the Assistant Director for ICT & Digital, the Assistant Director of STAR Procurement and the Head of Assurance as part of the Resources Leadership Team. You will be a crucial member of our Assistant Directors Delivery Group and attend Senior Leadership Team as and when required.

We are looking for an experienced professional who is keen to lead and develop Exchequer Services to deliver the best outcomes for the Council and our residents and businesses as part of an ambitious and forward-looking council. It is most important is that you share our vision and commitment for continuing to deliver better outcomes for the community so you need to be enthusiastic, highly motivated with excellent advisory and interpersonal skills. In addition, you must be innovative with a strong track record in providing great services to support residents, businesses, Council officers and Members. You must have the ability to adapt to changing legislative and working arrangements for the delivery of these services and taking the next step in progressing Exchequers digital journey.
