We are looking for a highly motivated, experienced and enthusiastic leader to undertake a newly created senior role for the Yorkshire and Humber Regional Research Delivery Network (RRDN).

Main duties of the job

The RRDN Strategic Development Director is senior officer responsible for the development, delivery and implementation of RRDN strategic plans to build research capacity and capability at organisational and regional level in Yorkshire & Humber.The RRDN Strategic Development Director will also work with the RDN Coordinating Centre in the strategic oversight of the RDN Portfolio to ensure that the Portfolio is maintained as a cohort of high-quality, fully-funded, viable and deliverable studies that are important to health and social care. Alongside their regional responsibilities the RRDN Operations Director will co-develop and lead national programmes of work in collaboration with the RDN Coordinating Centre .

This vacancy is only available to the current senior leadership team members of the NIHR Clinical Research Network Yorkshire and Humber and current employees of the host organisation (Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust).

Interviews for the post will take place in person Wc 3 June 2024 and the successful candidate must be able to commence in the post by 1 July 2024.

Job responsibilities

The RRDN Strategic Development Director is the senior officer responsible for the development, delivery and implementation of RRDN strategic plans to build research capacity and capability at organisational and regional level with particular emphasis on addressing the needs of the life sciences industry (across both commercial contract and commercial collaborative research). They will develop strong working collaborations and partnerships with organisations and leaders in health and care research and services in the RRDN region and seek to improve efficiency and effectiveness wherever possible.

The purpose of the RDN is to support the effective and efficient initiation and delivery of funded research across the health and care system in England for the benefit of patients, the health and care system and the economy. The RRDN Strategic Development Director will be responsible for creating and leading a 3-year RRDN Strategic Implementation Plan in line with the RDN strategic aims. The RRDN Strategic Implementation Plan will be developed in conjunction with regional partners, including NHSE regional offices, ICSs, AHSNs, patients and the public and should

include measures to tackle health inequalities, and

deliver the objectives of the NIHR Best Research for Best Health and Saving and Improving Lives: The Future of UK Clinical Research Delivery March 2021, Lord OShaughnessys review, and any subsequent national reviews and policy directives.

The RRDN Strategic Development Director will also work with the RDN Coordinating Centre (RDNCC) in the strategic oversight of the RDN Portfolio. This function will ensure that the Portfolio is maintained as a cohort of high-quality, fully-funded, viable and deliverable studies that are important to health and social care. The RRDN Strategic Development Director will maintain expert and in-depth knowledge of the capacity and capabilities of the infrastructure, settings, sites and investigators available to support and deliver research in the region (particularly in respect of commercial research).

Regionally the RRDN Strategic Development Director will line manage and coordinate the work of the teams established to support strategic development of research delivery capability and capacity, Portfolio oversight, and RRDN support functions. Alongside their regional responsibilities the RRDN Strategic Development Director will co-develop and lead national programmes of work in collaboration with the RDNCC.

  • Masters level qualification or equivalent

Experience

  • Comprehensive understanding of research, the NHS and the wider health and care system including associated responsibilities to the public and patients
  • Experience of working in the health and care research sector, the health and social care service sector or academic environment at a senior level
  • Comprehensive understanding of the UK research pathway and funding
  • Experience of co-creating and implementing strategies to build capacity and capability for the delivery of health and care research
  • Experience of contributing to the develop of national policy or strategies and translating those into regional plans
  • Professional research leadership, both strategic and operational at a senior level
  • Experience of working across complex organisational structures and effective matrix management
  • Significant experience of managing a large budget with solid knowledge of financial process requirements
  • Direct experience of business planning and robust financial management at appropriate scale
  • Knowledge of national systems, structures and processes for supporting clinical research in NHS and non-NHS settings
  • Experience of working collaboratively and in partnership with other organisations, with demonstrable experience of delivery across organisational boundaries
  • Evidence of managing effective collaborations and partnerships
  • Good understanding of performance management techniques
  • Knowledge of utilising Business Intelligence solutions to work within a performance management framework
  • Political astuteness and understanding of the health & social care context
