Cardiac Physiologist (Non-Invasive Cardiology)NHS AfC: Band 5

Job overview

  • The post holder will have the opportunity to develop skills in all areas of non-invasive Cardiology (ECG, ambulatory monitoring and reporting and physiologist-led exercise tolerance tests) and ILR or intracardiac monitor interrogation and reporting as well as future exposure and rotation through the following areas: pacemaker follow-ups, and cardiac catheterisation lab.
  • Rotation around a broad range of technical areas will be necessary to obtain competencies within the department and for state registration.
  • The successful candidate will need to work predominantly in non-invasive cardiac investigations across Ashford & St Peter’s Hospitals.

Main duties of the job

To competently perform interrogation and interpretation of ILR’s or ICM.

To independently lead, perform and report Exercise Tolerance Test.

To competently perform resting ECG’s on adults and paediatric out-patients and in-patients.

To competently analyse basic ECGs on adults and paediatric patients.

To competently perform ambulatory ECG (24, 48, 72, 7-day tests) and BP recordings.

To review and prioritise inpatient requests for cardiac investigations within ECG, ambulatory monitoring, exercise testing.

To liaise with ward and/or medical staff and ensure availability of technical staff when required in order to perform in-patient testing with lead Cardiac Physiologists.

To effectively, promptly, and professionally respond to emergency situations maintaining control and requesting assistance as necessary.

To participate in training in other disciplines when rotated through the department for on-going professional development and maintain standards of technical competency.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

· To assist with the efficient running of the technical service by prioritising the daily workload where appropriate.

· To deputise for the Senior Cardiac Physiologists when necessary and undertake any other duties at the discretion of the Operational Manager & Principal Cardiac Physiologist or his deputies.

· To be responsible for identifying equipment faults, and directly resolve fault issues by reporting them in a timely manner to senior staff members.

· To be responsible for the day-to-day running of the area in which they are working; ensuring all equipment is operational, stock levels are maintained, and that equipment and non-disposable items are cleaned according to departmental policies and procedures.

· To ensure that all staff are aware of economical use of supplies.

· To remain up to date with latest trends in clinical physiology translating these into practice and transferring this knowledge to staff within one’s area of responsibility.

· To assist with research studies as required.

· To participate in the in-house training and technical competency log within the department.

· To participate in the training of student physiologists on rotation through the department.

· To gain accreditation and join the Registration Council for Clinical Physiologists (RCCP).

· To work in accordance to standards set by the Society for Cardiological Sciences and Technology (SCST) and the RCCP.

· To ensure all patients receive appropriate and individualised care.

· To ensure that all data entered onto any databases are performed in a timely and accurate manner and that statistical records and audits are produced when required.

· To become familiar with the use of Cerner, PAS, PRISM and any other computerised systems integral to the running of the department.

· To make contact with patients via telephone to rebook appointments for DNA’s each day.

Qualifications & Training

Essential criteria

  • • BSc (Hons) Cardiac Physiology / Clinical Physiology or Equivalent
  • • Significant experience working within a Cardiology Department
  • • Demonstrate competency to perform and analyse an ECG and Ambulatory Monitor
  • • Demonstrate knowledge of indications, contra-indications, and stopping criteria for an ETT
  • • Demonstrate knowledge of professional code of conduct and guidance by the professional body for Physiologists
  • • Ability to work independently
  • • Ability to concentrate for long periods of time
  • • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • • IT literate
  • • Adaptable and flexible • Ability to wear lead apron • Ability to work cross-site • Ability to work extended working hours if necessary

Desirable criteria

  • • RCCP registration or with relevant qualifications to attain this
  • ILS Certified
