A quick look at the role
The General Manager will oversee and manage the contract to ensure its commercial success and the delivery of a high-quality service to Cornwall Council and its residents. You will effectively lead, and coordinate colleagues and resources dedicated to these contracts, ensuring client and company satisfaction while adhering to financial and organisational objectives. Develop and create the opportunity for strategic growth of the contract.
Your core responsibilities
- Service Management: Ensure service delivery aligns with contract specifications, conditions, and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), addressing any variances through action plans.
- Strategic Relationships: Build and maintain positive partnerships with Cornwall Council, Senior Officers, Councillors, and community groups, positioning Biffa as a trusted expert and partner in the Southwest.
- Annual and Financial Planning: Develop and implement the "Annual Service Delivery" plan, prepare budgets with Directors, and submit timely financial and variance reports to ensure alignment with organizational goals.
- Resource and Team Development: Lead and develop the senior management team in the depots, supervisors, and staff to drive operational excellence and explore additional commercial revenue opportunities.
- Legal Compliance and Health & Safety: Ensure adherence to all legal, company policies, and health and safety regulations, holding regular safety meetings and implementing robust monitoring processes.
- Fleet and Equipment Management: Collaborate with Fleet Managers to maintain vehicles and equipment per manufacturer recommendations and legislative requirements.
- Contractual Collaboration: Attend required contractual meetings, support Council inspections, and manage notices, responses, and additional work to meet agreed standards and timelines.
- Business Growth: Drive growth through innovative campaigns, non-core work opportunities, and creative solutions that enhance profitability and client satisfaction.
Our essential requirements
- Leadership and Operational Expertise: Extensive experience as a General Manager or in a similarly senior role, with a proven ability to manage large workforces (100+ employees) within a unionised, multi-shift, and commercially driven environment.
- Financial and Commercial Acumen: Strong profit and loss management skills, with senior-level experience in tendering, contract mobilization, and delivering results in time-critical settings.
- Health, Safety, and Legal Compliance: Deep knowledge of health and safety management, environmental legislation, and waste industry laws, ensuring compliance and adherence to evolving regulations.
- Qualifications and Industry Knowledge: Comprehensive understanding of the waste industry, with CPC qualification preferred, and awareness of current and upcoming environmental and workplace legislation.
