Role Overview:
The Test and Defect Manager is responsible for overseeing the testing and defect management processes throughout the software development lifecycle. The role involves coordinating with various stakeholders to ensure that software applications meet the required quality standards and are free from defects. The Test and Defect Manager will lead test planning, execution, and defect resolution efforts, ensuring timely delivery of high-quality software.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement test strategies, plans, and processes to ensure software quality.
- Define and manage test environments, tools, and data requirements.
- Collaborate with project teams to understand testing requirements, timelines, and objectives.
- Create test schedules, identifying dependencies, risks, and resource needs.
- Coordinate and manage the execution of test cases across multiple platforms (e.g., functional, non-functional, regression, integration, UAT).
- Ensure that testing is conducted in line with industry best practices, including manual and automated testing approaches.
- Ensure that all tests are properly documented and that test results are recorded accurately.
- Establish and maintain defect tracking processes and tools to ensure effective management of defects across all projects.
- Facilitate defect triage meetings, ensuring that defects are properly prioritised and assigned for resolution.
- Monitor and report on defect status and resolution progress to stakeholders.
- Ensure that root cause analyses are conducted for critical defects and that preventive actions are implemented.
- Collaborate with development, product management, and operations teams to ensure timely resolution of issues.
- Provide regular status reports, highlighting testing progress, defect trends, and potential risks to project delivery.
- Ensure that key stakeholders are informed of critical issues impacting software quality.
- Identify areas for improvement in the testing and defect management processes and implement changes to drive efficiency and effectiveness.
- Stay up to date with industry trends and emerging testing methodologies, incorporating them into the organisation’s QA practices.
- Mentor and coach QA/Test Engineers to build a culture of continuous improvement and high-quality software delivery.
- Oversee the implementation and usage of test management and defect tracking tools (e.g., JIRA, HP ALM, Selenium, etc.).
- Ensure that automation frameworks are utilised effectively to increase testing efficiency and reduce manual effort.
- Work closely with the automation team to identify areas for automated testing and integrate them into the overall test strategy.
- Identify and manage risks related to testing and defect management, ensuring mitigation strategies are in place.
- Escalate any critical testing or defect issues that may impact project timelines or quality to senior management.
Qualifications and Experience:
- 5+ years of experience in software testing, with a focus on test management and defect tracking.
- Proven experience leading test efforts for large-scale software development projects.
- Strong understanding of SDLC, Agile, and Waterfall methodologies.
- Hands-on experience with test management and defect tracking tools (e.g., JIRA, HP ALM, TestRail).
- Experience with both manual and automated testing approaches.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and collaborate with stakeholders at all levels.
- Solid understanding of software testing best practices, including functional, non-functional, and regression testing.
- Knowledge of automation tools and frameworks (e.g., Selenium, Cucumber, etc.).
