The Freeport Programme in Wales is a new opportunity that will help Wales continue to develop a globally competitive, entrepreneurial, inclusive and sustainable economy, whilst building the strength and resilience to overcome economic shocks such as those experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic. It represents a key commitment within the UK Government's Levelling Up White Paper and will make a positive contribution to the Welsh Government's commitments to the economy, fair work and the seven well-being goals set out in the Wellbeing of Future Generations (Wales) Act 2015 which deliver long term benefits to improve the economic, social, environmental and cultural wellbeing of Wales.
The Freeport Programme will look to incentivise private businesses to invest in new opportunities in Wales, particularly in relation to climate resilience and maximising progress towards decarbonisation.
