Our UHCW Adolescent Ward is a 12 bedded unit for 13-17-year-olds. We use a multidisciplinary team approach including nurses, clinicians and educators working collaboratively to support the care of adolescents across the Coventry and Warwickshire footprint. This role also encompasses the UHCW specific Nurse Development pathway. At UHCW NHS Trust we strive to offer all our staff exciting development opportunities. If successful, you will undertake a year's development program which will require completion of Paediatric and Adolescent specific competencies and additionally you will be required to complete the UHCW NHS Trust Paediatric Band 5 to 6 competencies.


On successful completion of the required competencies and following a discussion with the Ward / Unit Manager you will then be transferred from a Band 5 to Band 6 Agenda for change


Our nurses work closely with our leadership team and other specialist staff across the Paediatric unit and wider hospital to ensure adherence to the service commitment to youth engagement, building partnerships, equitable practices that promote diversity and inclusion, using strengths-based practices that empower young people and their care.
The successful applicant will have dual responsibility for facilitating, delivering, and coordinating the treatment and health care needs of adolescents who have been admitted to our dedicated age specific unit.


Here at UHCW we have well established collaborative multidisciplinary links with NHS, Voluntary and private sectors providers across the region to support our adolescents E.g., ROSA, KOOTH, Fine Futures, Local authorities etc.


As an Adolescent nurse here at UHCW we pride ourselves in our training and development programmes we have a dedicated Practice Education team to ensure training needs are met effectively in line with CPD and personal growth and development. Ward nurses will all be trained in CPI safety intervention Children and Young Peoples foundation training. Annual in house Paediatric bespoke mandatory days which encompass a variety of specialisms, theory, and skills. All members of nursing staff will be given the opportunity to complete a trust funded University CAMHS / Adolescent module course at Birmingham City University.

Adolescence is one of the most rapid and formative phases of human development. Distinctive physical, cognitive, social, emotional, and sexual development that takes places during adolescence demands special attention in local, national, and regional developments, polices, programmes and plans. Adolescent health encompasses physical, mental, and social heath. Adolescent physical health includes ensuring that adolescents receive the preventative care they need, complex long term physical health needs and specialist medical support e.g., Diabetes, Epilepsy, CF etc. Mental health includes promoting positive coping skills, risk management and support for Mental Health disorders. Social health includes supporting positive relationships and preventing violence.


UHCW adolescent nurses play a vital role in adolescent health, they provide education, prevention, advocacy to help YP avoid engaging in risky behaviours. Ward nurses will offer support to adolescents struggling with tobacco use, alcohol use, drug use, and mental health concerns. Our nurses advocate for the YP on the ward and for policies that will help improve adolescent health overall, and support YP who are struggling with sexual identity. We are also establishing pathways to look at the complicated issues around transition to adult service provision and making sure this process and journey is smooth and consistent for everyone involved.


Experienced Band 5 Development Nurse - On completion of all the required competencies and once transferred into the Band 6 role, you will be required to lead the ward team, demonstrating excellent organisational, clinical skills, and ensuring focus is on delivering high quality evidence-based care to the child and family, assuring UHCW NHS Trust Values and objectives always remain central.


Once the candidate has completed their one-year development program they will be expected to support their team with day-to-day clinical leadership and deliver family centered care to their own cohort of patients.


The postholder will have support from the Senior Paediatric nursing team, Band 6 Paediatric Clinical Co-Ordinators, and the Paediatric Education team.
