Technical Trainer

Birmingham, United Kingdom Direct Line Insurance Group plc Full time

Roadside Technical Trainer

Hours: 35 hours (Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm)

Hybrid Working: You'll work at our Technical Centre and occasionally from home. You'll be required to carry out 3-week blocks of training on site at the Technical Centre.

Let’s make the most of your talent

Join our Green Flag Patrol team as a Roadside Technical Trainer, where you'll take the lead in equipping both our newly appointed and experienced patrols with the essential skills and knowledge they require to excel in the industry. Moreover, you'll have the opportunity to leave your distinctive mark on our training model, shaping it for the future.

About us

At Direct Line Group, insurance is just the start. Combining decades of industry experience with talented people in every field from data, technology, customer care and auto repair, to HR, finance, and procurement, we’re a customer-obsessed market powerhouse. And we all work together to be brilliant for customers, every single day.

Stuck on the side of the road? We’re the people you call. Green Flag is a roadside rescue and recovery service rooted in independence and efficiency. We work smart - bringing the very best local technicians and independent garages across the UK together under one (green) flag. Our local specialists really are the bee’s knees. The top bananas. The dog’s, well, you know. Identical, flashy vans aren’t really their style. Why bother when they have all the skills they need to get our customers back on the move as quickly as possible.

What you'll be doing

Reporting directly to the Technical Customer Support Manager, you'll deliver roadside technical training to equip newly appointed patrols with industry-relevant knowledge and support during their induction. You'll help current patrols enhance their existing technical expertise, and keep them up to date with the latest advancements in vehicle technology. At times, you will need to provide on-site support, ensuring that technical training is effectively delivered in the actual working environment. Throughout your work, it is essential to maintain a strong focus on health and safety rules and best practices, ensuring that they are at the core of all training and assessment activities.

  • Create and deliver both theory training, in the classroom, and practical training/demonstrations in the workshop, create training schedules, and set forth clear agendas, defining course content and objectives, ensuring compliance with Health and Safety regulations and best practices
  • Provide in-depth feedback to learners about progress made from structured learning outcomes and objectives achieved
  • Recruitment of new patrols, from technical phone assessments to interviewing of potential candidates.
  • In partnership with the Patrol Leadership team, lead on opportunities for training and development of the patrols, while identifying, owning, and managing the risks involved in running our business, and working with the appropriate internal and external contacts to ensure proactive management of opportunities and threats following the Group Risk Framework minimum standards
  • Build and maintain relationships with leadership teams, the Technical team, and the patrol force, serving as the primary liaison for both employers and learners, and delivering necessary feedback on their progress.
  • Perform assessments of learners' skills to identify training needs, and develop technical training programmes following industry best practices and National Occupational Standards, encompassing all aspects of the assigned work
  • Create training materials, presentations, worksheets, and other instructional resources for both group and individual training sessions, while maintaining records of completed courses and furnishing reports
  • Observe and evaluate the outcomes of training initiatives, assessing the effectiveness of programmes and implementing enhancements
  • Plan and conduct learner assessments, offer feedback in compliance with established practices and qualification standards, and record assessment outcomes
  • Organise and administer on-site and on-the-job training and assessments, being the subject matter expert (SME) to provide guidance, counsel, and information to learners
  • Follow health and safety regulations and promote best practices within the workplace, ensuring learners understand their responsibilities regarding health and safety, including safe work practices and accident reporting
  • Maintain and update your own knowledge and skills through Continuous Professional Development (CPD), following the Awarding Organisation and company requirements, while participating in training as identified and relevant to the position
  • NEBOSH qualification desirable but not essential.

What we're looking for

  • Previous experience within a similar role as a Technical Trainer, either within roadside recovery or the automotive industry
  • Practical vocational skills and expertise related to roadside assistance and vehicle technology
  • Holds a recognised training/teaching qualification
  • The ability to motivate, inspire and develop individuals, to instil confidence, foster a sense of accomplishment, and guide learners in their professional development
  • Possess Health & Safety, and Risk Assessment knowledge, given the importance of safety in the roadside assistance industry
  • Somebody who is willing to travel to support recruitment and patrols across the UK.

What we offer in return

We wouldn’t be where we are today without our people and the wide variety of perspectives and life experiences they bring. That’s why we offer excellent benefits to suit your lifestyle and a flexible working model combining the best parts of home and office-working, varying with the nature of your role. Core benefits include:

  • Generous 9% employer pension contribution
  • Annual company bonus of up to 10%
  • 25 days holiday allowance (plus the option to buy or sell up to 5 days each year)
  • 50% off home, motor and pet insurance
  • Free travel insurance and Green Flag breakdown cover
  • Additional optional Health and Dental insurance
  • Plus, many more

There’s no-one else like you. No-one with the exact same mix of strengths, quirks, skills and thoughts. That’s why you could belong here. As part of a team of brilliant individuals, in a place that empowers you to be the best you can be.

We’re proud of who we are, of what we do, and what every single one of us brings. Every person, team, Squad, Tribe and Chapter, across every business that makes our Group. And we’re happy to say we’re customer obsessed.

Join us. Help us keep innovating and putting customers at the heart of everything. To be an insurance company of the future. When we work together, we can all achieve great things. Inspiring, challenging, and supporting each other to aim higher.

Difference makes us who we are. We believe everyone should feel comfortable to bring their whole selves to work – that’s why we champion diverse voices, build workplaces that work for people, and invest in the things that matter. From senior leadership to inclusivity networks, adaptive working to inclusion training, we’ve made it our mission to give you everything you need to be authentically you.
