Biomass Site Engineer

Spittal Northumberland, United Kingdom AMP Clean Energy Full time

Here at AMP, we are committed to supporting the energy transition by funding, developing, and delivering flexible energy solutions and helping businesses decarbonise.

Our mission is to create a smarter energy future. We are relentless in our focus on tackling the central challenge of our age – the energy transition.

The size and scale of the challenge means we must continually grow our team, bring in new ideas and new approaches and be ready to push the boundaries. At every level, we are looking for bold, ambitious, bright, and collaborative people that share our commitment to making a difference.

About the Opportunity

Our site in Berwick Upon Tweed is a state-of-the-art energy centre that will house electric and biomass boilers. Sustainable, locally sourced biomass fuel will provide the baseload decarbonisation and the electric boiler will kick-in when there is more wind energy being generated than the electricity system can use. This excess wind energy would otherwise be wasted. This ensures that the products leaving the site, carries a significantly reduced carbon footprint.

To ensure the efficient running of this site, we now have a fantastic opportunity for a Biomass Site Engineer with electrical experience to join our Industrial Biomass team.

The Biomass Site Engineer will report to the Site Manager and will undertake planned and reactive maintenance on biomass, and electric heating plant and associated equipment. The role will require periodically being on call on a rota system to respond site call outs during heating outages, loss of service or emergencies as required.

Interested? If you have excellent engineering credentials and attention to detail, with a ‘hands on’ approach to problem solving – AMP can offer you the challenge and opportunity you’re looking for.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Undertaking electrical repairs as required
  • Undertaking any planned maintenance, check attendance, testing, and record keeping ensuring compliance with statutory regulations and industry good practice governing LTHW, MTHW, LTHW feed water quality, biomass combustion and fuel management
  • Ensuring optimal and continuous operation of mechanical and electrical systems by performing routine inspections and maintenance, monitoring metering equipment and adjusting levels as necessary
  • Producing records of inspections, maintenance routines and repairs including photographic records
  • Assisting with the support and management of sub-contractors on site for ongoing operation and maintenance or capital works/upgrades
  • Facilitating the biomass fuel supply to the site, receiving deliveries, testing and recording results, and handling fuel onto the walking floor system where required utilising a tele-handler
  • Contributing to a high level of HSEQ performance on site, encouraging a strong HSEQ culture and adherence to HSEQ legislation and Group HSEQ policies and escalating any serious issues or HSEQ concerns to the Site Manager
  • Monitoring feed water and emissions quality
  • Liaising on site with the client’s engineering and maintenance teams, and maintaining excellent level of communication and working relationship on site
  • Raising work permits as required
  • Maintaining a high standard of cleanliness and house-keeping on site, together with sound management of site tools and spares stock

What we are looking for:

Experienced working within a heat and steam generating plant, with a keen interest in developing their knowledge and implementing improvements to drive efficiency, the successful candidate will also be able to demonstrate the following knowledge, skills and experience:

  • Electrical Engineering educational qualification (C&G, HNC, NVQ or equivalent)
  • HSEQ operator level training (e.g. safety passport/CSCS card), and training on completing site risk assessment/method statements
  • Valid UK driving licence
  • Completed Boiler operation accreditation scheme (BOAS) qualification for steam operator level would be desirable
  • Experienced in HTHW < MTHW and LTHW and steam systems including boilers, pumps, valves, hydraulics, controls etc Experienced in the maintenance and report of this equipment
  • Familiarity with DCS/BMS controls and CMMS systems
  • Strong engineering background, with electrical experience
  • Experience in working on heat generating plant and equipment within large industrial sites with a continual heat demand
  • Dependable and approachable to assist the team when problems arise
  • Honest and respectful towards others
  • Flexible, committed and determined to ensure high operational and HSEQ performance across the biomass asset for 24/7 energy demand

What will we offer in return?

We’ve built a culture founded on honesty, working hard, and enjoying ourselves. And we have created a workplace where everyone feels more connected, heard, and valued. You’ll receive, ongoing training and development, be encouraged to work towards relevant accreditations and be able to map out a clear journey of progression within your role. Our employee benefits include:

  • 26 days annual leave entitlement plus 8 days for public holidays (pro rota for part time)
  • Life Insurance
  • Employer pension contribution
  • Access to advice, counselling, and support
  • Access to GP services
  • Wellbeing tools and resources
  • Shopping and lifestyle discounts
  • Discounted gym membership

Additional Information:

  • Location: Simpsons Malt, Berwick Upon Tweed, TD15 2UZ
  • Competitive salary to be discussed at interview
  • Hours of work: 36.6 hours per week
  • Contract Type: Permanent

The site will operate 7 days a week (8am to 5pm), so the role will require weekend working, and out of hours on call, on a rota/shift pattern. This will also include periodic remote performance monitoring of the system during out of hours periods by the on-call engineer.
