Job description

The Afe Babalola Centre for Transnational Education at King's College London, seeks to appoint a Senior Lecturer in Transnational Education, based in King's Academy, with a focus on co-creating curriculum for training educators to teach at Levels 3 and 4, and with expertise in online and blended pedagogies and, ideally, experience working in an African context. The appointed candidate will teach the above and related topics as part of postgraduate degree programmes.

The vision for the Afe Babalola Centre is based on the power of transnational education to empower and enable Africa's talented young people to make meaningful contributions to their communities and the world. In the context of the Afe Babalola Centre, transnational education means education on transnational issues, disciplines, skills and competencies, co-created, and co-delivered through multilateral and multinational collaborations. An interest in increasing access at scale for underserved youth and the ability to teach on this theme would be advantageous, as is experience in facilitating interdisciplinary and international collaborations particularly around developing capacity in teaching.

The focus of scholarship should include practice and/or impact-focused approaches to pedagogy (e.g. co-creation with learners) and have an interdisciplinary dimension. The successful candidate will lead on the design and delivery of a postgraduate qualification, as well as elements of academic and pastoral support of postgraduate students. They will also be responsible for oversight of the delivery of teaching to in-person and online student cohorts. They will be able to pursue opportunities for conducting high quality education-focused scholarship in their field and will receive mentoring and support to develop their skills and experience in education, academic administration, and scholarship.

The appointment is to the Academic Education Pathway (AEP), which is focused on the delivery of education, education-related scholarship, and leadership in education. Indicatively 80% of a staff member's activities will be accounted for by a combination of teaching, supervision, student support, educational leadership and innovation, and administration; the remaining 20% will be dedicated to scholarship. Staff on the AEP are not contractually obliged to carry out research and will not have significant responsibility for research. The post is a fixed-term position of two years with a probation period of three months.

King's Academy is the centre for educational development dedicated to supporting all staff in enhancing the teaching and learning environment within the College. The successful candidate will work closely with members of the King's Academy team to ensure that the Afe Babalola Centre work is aligned with other developments and initiatives at King's.

This post will be offered on a fixed term contract until May 2026.

This is a full-time post - 100% full time equivalent

Key responsibilities

  • To co-develop teaching materials suitable for delivery online and in-person
  • To teach and supervise postgraduate students in-person and online, as necessary
  • To coordinate the work of a distributed team of co-developers in partner institutions in Africa
  • To disseminate and share learning from the Afe Babalola Centre work with colleagues in King's and other partner institutions
  • To undertake other reasonable academic duties at the request of the Academic Director

The above list of responsibilities may not be exhaustive, and the post holder will be required to undertake such tasks and responsibilities as may reasonably be expected within the scope and grading of the post.

Skills, knowledge, and experience

Essential criteria

  1. PhD and experience of Higher Education teaching, learning and assessment practice
  2. Knowledge of and experience working within an African context

  6. Experience of teaching relevant subjects at postgraduate level, with evidence of innovative and effective teaching and ability to engage and inspire students of diverse and international backgrounds
  7. Examples of disseminating education innovations and scholarship (e.g., department level, public sector, publications, conferences, workshops)
  8. In education and scholarship, an interdisciplinary mindset and aptitude for working within an interdisciplinary framework, including teaching across disciplines and beyond the immediate field of expertise
  9. A demonstrable commitment to internationalisation and an inclusive, diverse and collegiate approach to education and scholarship

  1. Completion of appropriate training in equal opportunities, diversity, and inclusion. Those without this will need to complete this in their first year in post.
  2. Fellowship or Senior Fellowship of the HEA
