Thank you for your interest in this exciting position of Staff Nurse for our Mental Health Acute Wards in Hammersmith and Fulham mental health unit. This role is an exciting and challenging opportunity for the right candidate. You will be required to demonstrate excellent communication skills while providing first line advice, support, and information to a wide range of patients that are in the acute phase of a mental health crisis. The post holder will provide support when someone, both known to services and unknown comes to the unit.

You will need to have important nursing assessment skills, knowledge of the legal frameworks that inform acute mental health care, an understanding of mental health diagnosis and a well-informed understanding of psychosocial interventions.

Main duties of the job

Job responsibilities

The Acute inpatient wards provide a place of safe and therapeutic environment for mental health patients that have either been detained under of the Mental Health Act or have agreed to be admitted on a voluntary basis. The core aim of the service is to provide a safe environment where patients will receive mental health care, that uses the principles of Trauma informed Care and applying the least restrictive principles possible in a safe and therapeutic environment.

The post holder will provide care, support and assessments of all clients who are referred to or enter their ward.

The post holder will be given clinical supervision by qualified staff and management responsibility is with the Ward Team Manager.

Complete assessments of the patients and provide feedback to the MDT on the progress of the patient and make recommendations for further interventions

To accept section paperwork from police/AMHP and ensure all information is accurately correct.

To provide nursing care to clients including physical assessments and interventions, mental health assessments and interventions, risk assessments and appropriate management plans for any overt risks identified

To gather collateral information on clients from GP, community teams, liaise with other trusts (SPA/CATT/CMHT), family and friends if possible.

To provide accurate and comprehensive handover of patients attendance presentation on a daily basis.

  • Experience of Inpatient Mental Health
  • Experience of completing assessment and providing plans of care for patients that are in acute state of crisis
  • Working with other professions within a multi-disciplinary team and contributing to the joint plans following on from a MH assessment
  • Experience of working with patients that are acutely distressed and are at risk of becoming violent or aggressive
  • Experience of leading a team and appropriately delegating tasks to ensure the highest level of care is delivered within a service

Desirable


  • HCA Experience of working in a health care setting
  • Experience of working with individuals that have complex physical health care needs and ensuring the receive the correct nursing care

Knowledge and skills

Essential


  • To understand and have experience of risk management
  • Able to contribute to complex discussions around patient's care
  • Able to challenge decisions that are not in line with best practice
  • Understanding the relationship between restrictive practice and violence
  • A clear understanding of the safeguarding process and when to escalate concerns

Desirable


  • An understanding of Quality Improvement
  • An understanding of a variety of psychological interventions that will help support the management of patients in crisis
