We are seeking a passionate and experienced Head of English to lead our well-established English Learning Area. Mountainview High School offers a supportive and inclusive environment where staff and students are encouraged to thrive in academic excellence, creativity, and critical thinking.

About the role:

As the Head of English, you will:

  • Lead and manage the English Learning Area, overseeing curriculum design, resource allocation, and teacher development.
  • Deliver engaging and differentiated lessons across various year levels, inspiring students to develop a love for literature, language, and effective communication.
  • Foster a culture of academic excellence by promoting a wide range of reading and writing opportunities both within and beyond the classroom.
  • Mentor and support staff within the department, ensuring professional growth and collaboration.
  • Oversee student achievement in NCEA (National Certificate of Educational Achievement) English, ensuring assessment processes meet NZQA (New Zealand Qualifications Authority) standards.
  • Contribute to the wider school community through leadership in literacy initiatives and school-wide events.

Key responsibilities:

  • Curriculum Leadership: Ensure the English curriculum is engaging, inclusive, and aligned with the New Zealand Curriculum Framework and school goals.
  • Team Management: Lead and support the professional development and Professional Growth Cycle of English department staff.
  • Student Success: Foster high achievement and participation in English across all year levels, with a focus on critical thinking and communication skills.
  • Resource and Budget Management: Manage the department’s budget, ensuring efficient use of resources and supporting the acquisition of books, technology, and teaching materials.

The ideal candidate will:

  • Demonstrate a deep understanding of NCEA and the English curriculum.
  • Possess strong leadership and team-building skills.
  • Be an enthusiastic advocate for the value of English in students’ academic and personal growth.
  • Exhibit excellent organisational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
