Care after Combat – Operations Lead & Executive Officer

Location: Newark, Nottinghamshire, with scope for hybrid working.

Responsible to: CEO

Responsible for: Delivery of Care after Combat operations across England and Wales.

Level: Senior Management.

Main Role and Responsibilities

The Operations Lead and Executive Officer for Care after Combat is a critical and influential Senior Management role that is responsible for delivery of the charity’s operational effect and forms a significant part of the executive function. You will be joining the charity at an exciting time with the roll-out of the second phase of a national NHS England contract due in Q2 of 2024, alongside other service and structural developments in the pipeline.

As Operations Lead:

You will be responsible for the delivery of charity operations across all of England and Wales and will be heavily involved in delivering the strategic intent of the charity, as endorsed by the board of Trustees. Supported by a Deputy Operations Lead, you will lead and motivate the operational staff and volunteers, and HQ staff, to deliver high quality and effective support to veterans in justice. You will monitor and report on services delivered, both internally and to commissioners of contracted elements. You will liaise with HMPPS, partner providers, other third sector organisations and statutory bodies to ensure optimum working relationships, delivering best effect for service beneficiaries. You will maintain a strategic view of operations with an eye on continuous improvement and efficiency of services, delivering best value against finite charitable resources.

As Executive Officer:

  • You will be part of the HQ staff team Executive function and will deputise for the CEO in their absence.
  • You will be line manager to the Executive Assistant and, ergo, will oversee a wide range of activity and will be the Senior Management Team (SMT) level focal point for HR, Policy & Procedures, Admin and Accounts.

General:

You will form one-third of the SMT alongside the Clinical & Research Lead and the CEO. The SMT meet periodically to review and update the charity’s short, medium, and long-term strategies, for subsequent Trustee endorsement. You will input to, and be present at, quarterly Trustee Meetings. As an SMT member, you will be required to represent the charity at various events and functions, including during evenings and weekends.

The role can be delivered via a hybrid working function but very regular presence at the HQ office in Newark, Nottinghamshire, (your designated place of work) will be required, along with occasional travel nationwide in support of regional operations staff and wider charity commitments.

You will be supported in your role by the CEO (your Line Manager), the Clinical & Research Lead, the Deputy Operations Lead, the Executive Assistant, and the wider Care after Combat Team.

Duties include but will not be limited to:

  • Strategic oversight of, and primary responsibility for, the delivery of Care after Combat operations;
    Actively and comprehensively contribute to SMT activities;
  • Work collaboratively with third parties as required, fostering strong, unambiguous working relationships;

  • Line-manage the Executive Assistant;
  • Ensure appropriate support to delivery staff and volunteers through both management and client supervision;
  • Arrange and deliver quarterly Regional Coordinator forums;
  • Oversee the arrangement and delivery of periodic VM forums by the VMC;
  • Attend and input to quarterly Trustee meetings;
  • Chair bi-weekly Management Team Meetings;
  • Networking with relevant organisations and other charities;
  • Represent Care after Combat as and when required and always conduct business in line with the identified aims, values and plans of the charity, acting as an exemplar role model to the rest of the team;
  • Provide high quality written reports in line with Care after Combat reporting policies, governance strategies and contractual requirements;
  • Confidently deliver high quality briefs to high-level, diverse and multiple stakeholders;
  • Other duties that are relevant to the charity’s care and support of veterans in the justice system may be assigned by the CEO.
