Your new role

National Highways currently has an exciting opportunity for an experienced leader in road safety to join the Road Safety Division in Safety, Engineering and Standards (SES). 

In this role you will be responsible for leading the engagement between national policy and regional delivery teams within the company’s implementation of a Safe System approach. As part of this you will help ensure that strategies, policies, programmes and projects are operationalised in a consistent manner with due regard to both Safe System and best practice approaches. 

You will also drive innovation and development of additional measures to meet or exceed National Highways ambitious casualty reduction targets, and how these and existing measures can be scaled to ensure maximum benefit nationally. Within a Safe System context you can expect to work collaboratively across the Road Safety Division, wider organisation and with our extensive network of stakeholders and delivery partners.

What you’ll be leading on
  • Building and maintaining excellent working relationships between central policy teams in the Road Safety Division and the regionally based teams in Operations.
  • Ensuring regional and national priorities are combined in the most effective way to maximise casualty reduction efforts and make best use of the available resources. 
  • Providing road safety specialist technical support to ensure projects utilise current best-practice approaches and are focused in the right areas to deliver business priorities.
  • Identifying and developing the skills, knowledge, insights and business processes required to address regional road safety challenges.
  • Working with regional road safety leads on reporting, evidence and assurance regarding road safety activities and related outcomes. 

To be successful

  • High-level relationship and stakeholder management skills
  • Advanced influencing and communication skills including the ability to negotiate and collaborate with senior leaders, partners and stakeholders
  • An in-depth knowledge of the road safety industry and related best practice
  • Proven experience of developing solutions and providing specialist advice in relation to road safety
  • High-level organisational skills including the ability to establish and manage task and finish groups across multiple teams
  • Experience of the successful delivery of complex projects or change programmes
