Job Purpose

To work with the Carbon Strategy and Planning Manager to lead, develop and manage UU’s strategic direction for climate mitigation related activities across all business areas, developing strategies that support water, wastewater and bioresources service delivery which value and support long-term plans to net zero.

To effectively communicate and influence internally to integrate strategies into wider business plans, including WRMP, DWMP and AMP8 business plans. The role holder will own the strategic plan for delivery of the company's science based targets and carbon pledges to net zero and work across the business to support carbon working and project groups to continually improve our carbon performance.

To communicate and influence externally including the industry's Net Zero operational emissions target by 2030 and policy changes with Defra, the Environment Agency, Department for Energy Security & Net Zero and the Committee for Climate Change.

To work with the Carbon Technical Specialist Manager to understand and support creation of the detail of climate related annual reporting and disclosures. The main purpose of this role will be carbon (climate change mitigation) but could also include adjacent strategy development e.g. hydrogen or clean air.

Job Accountabilities

  • Responsible for the development, maintenance, communication and embedment of climate change mitigation policies and strategies.
  • Effective communication of our climate change ambitions and commitments to ensure these are embedded across the business
  • Responsible for governance and reporting for climate change mitigation working groups across the business and facilitating changes required in our climate change policies and strategies.
  • Responsible for the strategic carbon plan to achieve our science based targets, carbon pledges and net zero.
  • Develop horizon scanning activity alongside the Carbon Technical Specialist Manager for all carbon related issues, including identification of forthcoming changes in legislation and longer term strategic risks or opportunities. Help the business to prepare for these risks and opportunities to protect and grow value and reputation.
  • Represent UU on working groups at a sector level and work with regulators and other stakeholder groups on relevant commitments and future policy influence.
  • Support the identification and implementation of research and development priorities and UKWIR project steering groups.
  • Contribute carbon and climate change mitigation content required for business planning including any queries and submissions required to Ofwat relating to PR24 for GHG emissions.
  • Support and deputise for the Carbon Strategy and Planning Manager alongside the Carbon Technical Specialist Manager.

Knowledge And Skills

  • Highly developed interpersonal, influence and communications skills with experience of planning and delivering effective communications strategies
  • A strategic and innovative thinker with the ability to create and deliver plans which align to the strategic priorities and tactical needs of the business, able to make informed judgement through well-developed business acumen and the analysis of complex information, completed by self or others.
  • Proven experience in stakeholder management including ability to influence multiple teams (both direct and indirect) to ensure that climate change mitigation strategies and plans are delivered.
  • Good organisational and prioritising skills to ensure that work is managed through to completion
  • Ability to work independently with minimal day to day supervision and proactively manage own time and work plan
  • Able to articulate opportunities and risks
  • A developed understanding of GHG emissions accounting.
  • A good understanding of UU and the water sector. Understanding of the regulatory frameworks, company business planning process and strategic direction.
  • Qualified to degree level in a relevant subject, or equivalent qualifications and/or experience.
