Exercise of general professional duties

Carry out the professional duties of a teacher as circumstances may require, under the reasonable direction of the Head.

Teaching
  • having regard to the curriculum for the school, and development of the abilities and aptitudes of the pupils
  • planning and preparing schemes of work and lessons
  • having regard to the school policies relating to teaching and learning
  • establishing and maintaining a working atmosphere conducive to learning by setting
  • using teaching methods, resources and approaches which sustain progress and interest
  • ensuring effective teaching of whole classes, according to education needs, groups or individuals within a whole class setting, so that learning objectives are met and best use is made of teaching time
  • setting high expectations for all pupils notwithstanding individual differences including gender or cultural backgrounds
  • creating a classroom environment which celebrates supports and extends opportunities for learning including class displays highlighting topics and work
  • Adapting tasks and work to ensure that all pupils can achieve
  • assessing, recording and reporting on the development, progress and attainment
  • develop an effective partnership with parents to support their child’s learning and personal development
  • Use external and internal data to inform teaching and learning

Other activities

  • follow the school’s Child Protection Policy and Procedures for safeguarding of pupils
  • promoting the general progress and well-being of individual pupils and of any class or group of pupils assigned
  • support pupils as form tutor
  • communicating and co-operating with parents, stakeholders and outside organisation as required
  • attending school functions which occur from time to time in the evenings and at weekends, e.g. Carol Service, school plays, Open Days etc
  • contributing to the school termly magazine with appropriate news and articles of interest
  • taking part in the rota for breaks, lunchtime, and after school clubs and duties across the school day
  • actively promoting the fundamental British values
  • valuing diversity and showing understanding of the protected characteristics as set out in the Equality Act, 2010
  • respect and maintain confidentiality in relation to children, families and staff
  • be a committed and active member of the staff team and school community
  • be an ambassador for the school, including in the wider community

Assessments and reports

  • providing or contributing to oral and written assessments, reports and references relating to individual pupils and groups of pupils and attendance at parent-teacher meetings twice each year
  • writing or contributing to termly reports for parents including any additional reporting that may be needed in the ongoing support of pupils' education and welfare

Performance Management

  • participating in performance management arrangements

Review, induction, further training and development

  • reviewing from time to time methods of teaching and programmes of work
  • participating in arrangements for further training and professional development as such including undertaking training and professional development which aim to meet needs identified in statements of objectives or in performance management
  • in the case of serving an induction period, participating in arrangements for supervision and training

Educational methods

  • working with the Head and other teachers on the preparation and development of courses of study, teaching materials, teaching programmes, methods of teaching and assessment and pastoral arrangements

Discipline, health and safety

  • Ensuring the health, safety, welfare an discipline amount pupils when both in school and on authorised out of school activities. Ensuring an appropriate risk assessment is in place.

Staff meetings

  • participating in meetings at the school

Cover

  • supervising and so far as practicable teaching any pupils where the person timetabled to take the class is not available to do so

External/Internal examinations

  • participating in arrangements for preparing pupils for external examinations, assessing pupils for the purposes of such examinations and recording and reporting such assessments; and participating in arrangements for pupil’s presentation for, and conducting, such examinations

Administration

  • participating in administrative and organisational tasks
  • attending assemblies, registering the attendance of pupils and supervising pupils, whether these duties are to be performed before, during or after school sessions

Safeguarding & Child Protection

  • The post holder’s responsibility for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young persons for whom they are responsible or with whom they come into contact will be to adhere to and ensure compliance with the school’s safeguarding policy statement at all times. If in the course of carrying out the duties of the post the post holder becomes aware of any actual or potential risks to the safety or welfare of children in the school, they must report any concerns to the Designated Safeguarding Lead.

2. SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop and extend the teaching of Drama, working with the Director of Studies to implement curricula for Years 3-11
  • Share good practice of teaching Drama with the SLT and other teachers.
  • Ensure that IT is used appropriately with Drama
  • Support colleagues as necessary in the teaching of Drama
  • Prepare pupils for exams and assessments in Drama, following the school’s chosen syllabus and support them as needed in their journey to achieving GCSE qualifications
  • Lead the schools highly successful Performing Arts Programme
  • Work with music, dance and drama teachers to prepare termly performance evenings and end of year performances
  • Liaise as necessary with the parents of PAS to ensure their attendance at lessons, clubs, rehearsals and performances
  • Be available for evening performances, directing as necessary.
  • Ensure that all performers have appropriate costumes for musical theatre productions
  • Plan and deliver musical theatre clubs and drama clubs
  • Co-ordinate two ‘Showcases’ throughout the year which should include all elements of the scholarship for the PAS parents
  • Co-ordinate staff involvement in performances and ensure performances are polished and prepared
  • Prepare programmes for performances working in collaboration with the administration staff
  • Follow the PAS curriculum and programmes of study for Musical Theatre
