The Head of Engagement and Development is a significant role within the School, working closely with the Whole School Leadership Committee (WSLC) to help manage strategic priorities for The Abbey. 

The role is part of a wider team looking after admissions, marketing, fundraising and engagement with the community. The post-holder will be responsible for relationships with local, peer and national stakeholders, and also have overall responsibility for the alumnae community, working closely with the Engagement and Development Officer. The role fundamentally involves sharing and celebrating The Abbey story and supporting the profile of the school. This in turn supports the recruitment of students and connects to fundraising and the development of close relationships with supporters and friends.

The post-holder will be heavily involved with ARCH , our leading partnership and community programme , offering learning opportunities for young people across Reading via an innovative network of schools, charities, businesses and other organisations. The post-holder reports to the Director of Marketing, Admissions and Development but also has direct links with other key leaders including the Heads of Finance and Resources, Junior and Senior Schools and the overall Head.

The post holder will lead on a comprehensive programme that fosters meaningful connections with alumnae and other members of The Abbey Community and promotes warm relationships and engagement. They will oversee all fundraising campaigns and initiatives with a particular focus on capital project and bursary support. Key Responsibilities:

  • Share and celebrate the story of The Abbey with all relevant partners
  • Build relationships on the local and national scale to help deliver ambitious partnership work that brings benefit to all involved as part of the ARCH programme
  • Play a central role along with the marketing team in how the School communicates externally and in activity to support student recruitment
  • Create and deliver substantial projects to increase the profile of the school and support and enhance our position in the sector
  • Oversee the strategy for engagement with local, peer and national partners
  • Develop and lead the school’s fundraising strategy and approach
  • Oversee and develop the lifelong relationship with alumnae through events, communications, and development of other roles including ambassadors and mentors
  • Line management of the Development and Engagement team
  • Working with colleagues across the School to understand and take part in projects that support development and marketing activities
  • Represent The Abbey School in a range of environments.
  • Work closely and hold discussions with Governors to ensure the greatest involvement in relationship-building and strategic development 
  • Demonstrate and encourage our key purpose in all ways: to equip students to live with confidence, purpose and joy
  • Represent the School’s values of courage, honesty and kindness and foster the warm and collaborative approach required in all roles in the School.

  • Exemplary pastoral and safeguarding practice and readiness to work in an environment with young people, one that is fast-paced and full of energy and buzz
  • Genuine interest in and commitment to girls’ education and to the values of The Abbey School 
  • Relevant degree or equivalent qualification in Development or proven track record of extensive experience working in partnership and community work
  • High level experience in building and maintaining relationships with organisations and individuals
  • Experience of communications and of representing organisations in various settings
  • Experience of running teams and line managing colleagues
  • Experience of leading and delivering innovative programmes and projects with substantial reach in terms of stakeholders
  • Fundraising experience in a similar sector preferred
  • Knowledge of the sector and market

This is a permanent, full time position working all year round and provides a comprehensive reward package to include 25 days holiday, 4 discretionary days over Christmas and all public holidays.
