What you'll be doing:

  • You will join a team of engineers providing technical assurance that the Dreadnought class SSBNs will meet the whole boat signature requirements
  • You will be responsible for assessing technical verification and validation evidence provided by the Dreadnought technical authorities, such as BAE Systems
  • You will provide signatures assurance to the Dreadnought Alliance team
  • Develop business awareness and build strong working relationships with stakeholders
  • Work independently with limited technical direction as part of a small specialised team of submarine stealth engineers

Your skills and experiences:

Essential:

  • The holder of the post would be expected to have a minimum of a degree in one of the following fields: Noise and vibration/Acoustics/mechanical engineering/Physics/electrical engineering or a related engineering discipline
  • The holder of the post will be eligible to apply for developed vetting
  • The holder of the post is expected to attend the office three days per week. Due to the nature of the work, it is necessary to access classified IT systems which cannot be accessed at home
  • The holder of the post is expected to undertake a fair amount of travel about the UK to MoD, and partner industry sites. Some foreign travel is also expected - for example to conferences, or allied defence sites abroad

Desirable:

  • Submarine signatures knowledge would be desirable, but not mandatory, as specific and on the job training will be provided
  • Interest in submarine/warship engineering
  • Experience of using computer programming languages such as Matlab for modelling and data analysis
  • Experience working in the defence sector

The Dreadnought Signatures team:

The signatures discipline is a deeply technical role, and there are many systems on-board the submarine which have the potential to impact the signatures of the platform. These range from rotating machinery, fluid-moving, electrical equipment and the steel of the hull, to the radar cross section of the combat systems masts. It is also necessary to understand how the signatures generated by submarines can be detected, for example understanding how the sources of vibration translate to radiated acoustic noise is the sea which can be detected by sonar systems. As such, the post holder will have the opportunity to learn about many of systems on-board the submarine, as well as the engineering and science associated with submarine stealth.
