You’re an engineer in defence and want what all engineers want: to make a difference.


Logically, you’d work for the biggest defence companies because you’d work on complex, cutting-edge projects, have access to great resources/facilities, and have security and prestige.


But engineers tend to leave these companies because they feel like a number, don’t have enough impact, and often don’t see the project through the entire system lifecycle.


In short, they feel like a small fish in a big pond, and they’re not making enough of a difference.


The answer is working as a System Design Authority for one of the UK defence industry's last independent, family-run engineering companies with a portfolio of projects as broad as the smile on your face once you join.


An ex-RAF veteran runs the company and has dedicated his career to building comprehensive, cutting-edge military equipment for land and maritime clients.


He knows and cares about all his 180 employees, believes in sustainable growth, and redundancy is a red line for him; he’s never made a redundancy in his 45 years running the company.


A smaller business means your work is more important and visible. You’ll have fewer corporate politics, layers of management, and red tape to deal with, leaving you to enjoy more of the technical and impactful work engineers live for.


You’d be the System Design Authority, technically leading a major new project team in the land domain for C4ISR customers, and you’d work across the entire lifecycle, from bid to release and aftercare.


You’ll build complex battlefield communications systems involving specialist sensors, electronics, signal processing, firmware, and software. You'll handle the challenge of creating and coding signals impenetrable to enemy interception.

Role – Senior Engineer (System Design Authority)

Salary – Up to £70,000.

Headline Benefits – 24 days holiday + public holidays (Paid overtime or take hours back), flexible hours around core 9.30-12.00 and 14.00-16.00, role-specific allowances, 7% matched pension, BUPA private medical, relocation package available in line with HMRC terms.

Work Policy – Due to the importance/type of the project, it’ll be 4-5 days PW in-office, so you’d need to live within an hour of the Chertsey or Portland (Dorset) office or be willing to relocate.


HERE’S WHAT YOU’LL NEED:


  • You currently have SC clearance as a single British passport holder and would be willing to get DV clearance if you don’t already have it.
  • You’ll be skilled in designing systems across the entire lifecycle within the defence industry, including hardware, software, firmware and electronics.
  • You have experience with technologies like modern C++ (14+), Java, and C#; you have a forward-thinking mentality and are willing to use new technology and processes.
  • You’ll understand network technologies and military-grade COTS communications and sensor systems.
  • You’ll have experience with requirements management tools like DOORS or similar.
