This is an excellent opportunity to join the Nephrology department at East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust. This is a Locum Consultant appointment for reason of filling the vacancy whilst we wait to appoint on a substantive basis.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will share the responsibilities for providing acute nephrology and AKI care in a large tertiary renal unit (non-transplant) and providing care for a cohort of general medical and renal patients and be part of a team of consultants performing practical procedures including tunneled dialysis catheter insertions, peritoneal dialysis catheters and native/transplant biopsies and training junior doctors. Dual accreditation in Renal and General Internal Medicine is desired. The post is based at the Lister Hospital in Stevenage but with clinical activity at other satellite sites. Job description
Job responsibilities

  • Be part of a team of consultants performing practical procedures including tunnelled dialysis catheter insertions, peritoneal dialysis catheters and native/transplant biopsies and training junior doctors
  • Provide care for a cohort of patients receiving renal replacement therapy
  • Have joint responsibilities in overseeing delivery of an expanding OP service that includes specialist nephrology, outreach, and post-transplant clinics
  • Have joint responsibility to participate in the referral/advisory service to nearby non-renal centres.
  • Participate in the renal on call rota
  • Participate in General internal medicine inpatient care
  • Participate in the general medical on call rota

Person Specification
Qualifications / Training
Essential

  • Full GMC registration with a Licence to Practice
  • College Membership (MRCP) or qualification of an equivalent level
  • Dual accreditation in renal and GIM medicine
  • Advanced Life Support or demonstration of ability to achieve ALS immediately upon appointment
  • Evidence of being up to date and fit to practice safely, and aware of own training needs

Desirable

  • College Fellowship
  • Postgraduate degree (or equivalent)

Previous Experience
Essential

  • Broad range of experience in renal medicine, in particular experience of post-transplantation, dialysis, vascular access, experience in management of patients in ICU and HDU and fully competent in tunneled line insertions, native renal biopsies, and transplant renal biopsies.
  • Experience of supervising undergraduates, doctors in training and other colleagues
  • Ability to offer and be accountable for full and independent expert diagnostic opinion
  • Can evidence leading on patient safety issues and achieving a change in practice

Skills

  • Able to evidence engagement with clinical governance and the identification of errors and the learning from errors.
  • Evidence engagement with appraisal and revalidation
