Control Systems Engineer

Department: System & Integration

Employment Type: Permanent - Full Time

Location: Reading

Description

We are looking for enthusiastic, creative, and hard-working Control Systems Engineers who are ready to develop and implement control systems for our satellite and the propulsion system payload, shaping the future of space. You will work closely with our Electronics & Hardware and Mechanical Engineering teams.

Please note that as we prepare for our maiden satellite mission, we are in a critical growth phase. This role will often require extended hours and is not a typical 9-to-6 position.

Key Responsibilities

We realize this is a broad set of responsibilities, and we're looking for candidates who excel in at least 3 or more of the areas
  • Control System Development: Design, simulate and test control systems to ensure stable and reliable operation in space environments.
  • System Integration and Testing: Integrate control systems with propulsion and other subsystems, performing rigorous testing under simulated space conditions (thermal vacuum, vibration, and radiation).
  • Autonomous Fault Management: Develop fault detection and correction strategies to enhance satellite resilience and autonomous operations.
  • Iterative Development: Work in a fast-paced, highly collaborative environment to produce and refine rapid design iterations.
  • Modelling and Analysis: Use MATLAB/Simulink and other tools to model complex systems, analyze performance, and validate control algorithms.
  • Circuit and Firmware Development: Collaborate with electronics engineers to design circuits and implement control algorithms for microcontroller-based systems, ensuring space-grade reliability.
  • Code Generation: Create isolated MATLAB/Simulink control modules for embedded system deployment. This includes separating control logic from simulation code and defining clear interfaces with consideration for microcontroller resource constraints.

Requirements
  • Educational Background: MEng, MSc, or PhD in Electronics, Mechatronics, Automation, Control Systems, Robotics, Aerospace, Mechanical, or a related discipline.
  • Control Expertise: Strong understanding and hands-on experience with control design, tuning, and implementation.
  • Electronics Knowledge: Familiarity with power electronics and electrical power converters, with experience in PPU systems highly desirable.
  • Modelling and Simulation Skills: Proficiency in MATLAB/Simulink for control system design and analysis.
  • Embedded Systems: Experience developing firmware for microcontroller-based systems.
  • Problem-Solving Skills: Analytical mindset with the ability to tackle complex challenges in control system design and drive them forward independently.
  • Collaborative Mindset: Ability to work effectively in interdisciplinary teams to deliver mission-critical solutions.

Preferred Experience (a plus but not required)
  • Experience with space-qualified systems or the aerospace industry.
  • Power Processing Unit (PPU) development.
  • Familiarity with PCB design, schematic creation, and layout.
  • Knowledge of hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing.
  • Hands-on experience with high-power systems.
  • Understanding of environmental challenges in space, such as radiation tolerance and thermal management.
  • Experience with Attitude Determination and Control Systems (ADCS).

Why join us
  • Equity and competitive salary: NewOrbit offers competitive salaries and company ownership stakes. Dedication and hard work are rewarded with a stake in the business you are helping to build.
  • Pioneering Space Technology: Join NewOrbit and contribute to launching groundbreaking technology into space next year.
  • Unmatched ownership and impact: You'll experience a level of input that's rare in this industry. You'll participate in the full lifecycle of satellite technology development.
  • Join an exceptional team: Work with some of the brightest scientists and engineers out there.
  • Great culture: You'll be part of an exciting, collaborative work culture with engineering at heart.
