The Materials Engineering Technology (MET) team is increasing capabilities to support projects in the London, England Energy business unit of Bechtel Global. There is a vacancy for a degreed Materials Engineer in the practice of Metallurgy/Materials Engineering, Corrosion Engineering or Metallurgy. Applicants without degree qualifications may be considered if they have obtained professional status through a vocational route. A minimum of two years industrial experience in corrosion science/engineering and/or metallurgy/materials is required.

JOB DIMENSIONS:

Materials Engineer I will report to the Lead Engineer (Materials Engineering Technology). Duties include the following:

  • Establish metallurgical requirements for equipment and piping in power systems, petroleum refineries, petrochemical plants, and power plants
  • Develop technical specifications for metallic materials and corrosion control
  • Support to engineering disciplines in preparation of data sheets and requisition packages
  • Review of materials content in technical bids
  • Provide post award technical support to requisitioning engineers
  • Support the project through construction and commissioning phases
  • Perform standard materials engineering activities on projects with minimal technical oversight.

Specific capabilities for the role include:

  • A working knowledge of the principles and practices of Materials Engineering
  • Ability to coordinate work with other engineering disciplines.
  • Knowledge of welding processes and weld procedure/weld procedure qualification
  • Knowledge of international materials standards and pressure vessel and piping fabrication codes
  • Some knowledge of material damage mechanisms associated with petroleum refineries, petrochemical plants, and power plants

The candidate will be required to:

  • Plan and conduct independent work, using sound judgment in the evaluation, selection, application and adaptation of engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria.
  • Devise practical approaches to solving materials engineering problems.
  • Coordinate technical issues with other departments on projects including constructability requirements and reviews.
  • Travel to support activities at construction sites, supplier’s works or in other engineering offices

The materials engineer will work as part of an international MET team and should also have some basic knowledge of:

  • Nondestructive examination
  • Paint and coatings
  • Thermal insulation
  • Non-Metallic materials

Basic Requirements:

Minimum of 2 years industrial experience in corrosion science/engineering and/or metallurgy/materials

Preferred Requirements:

Bachelor's degree in Metallurgy, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or related technical field
