AsHead of Legal Governance, Compliance & Risk, you will lead, manage and oversee the GRC function, staff and program including Privacy and Information Security at Olympus in the UK and Ireland.

You will enjoy the necessary autonomy to develop and continuously improve the Olympus Compliance Management System. Directly responsible for supporting and providing direction and guidance to assigned entities concerning GRC, divisions, business groups, and functions, you will help to ensure employees conduct their business with a high level of compliance and integrity.

This role forms part of the Senior Leadership team in the UK&I working closely with the Regional Managing Director, and is a member of the Regional GRC Leadership team EMEA.

Please note:this role involves leading a small, local team who are based at our UK&I HQ in Essex, with hybrid remote working adopted. For the benefit of the team and your stakeholders, a regular office attendance is needed.

What are the key responsibilities?

  • Operate, develop and harmonize the UK&I compliance management system among functions and subsidiaries
  • Bring the essence of GRC, i.e. "prevent, detect, respond and improve" to life, switching smoothly between operational, hands-on work and a strategic, leadership or managerial work
  • Assist the Chief Compliance Officer (CCO) EMEA and the Global CCO in living, implementing, further developing and continuously improving Olympus's Compliance Management System to ensure that it: supports and promotes a company-wide culture of compliance; enhances the reputation of Olympus and minimizes risks of non-compliance with applicable laws, regulations Olympus’ Code of Conduct and Olympus policies; and meets or exceeds the standards set forth in published governmental guidance
  • Establish, in alignment with the CCO EMEA, regular plans for policy review/maintenance, compliance risk assessments, monitoring, testing, data analytics, and risk mitigation action tracking to ensure compliance with applicable requirements throughout the region and manage and report progress as appropriate and necessary
  • Plan and manage the execution of the compliance risk assessment and mitigation process, in adherence to the global compliance risk assessment framework, and the compliance maturity measurement process for subsidiaries and develop improvement programs
  • Establish, structure, and routinely review compliance policies in UK&I rules, guidelines, and procedures for alignment with Olympus’ Compliance requirements and applicable local laws and regulations
  • Actively participate as a subject matter representative in meetings and project workstreams as assigned
  • Plan and oversee use of approved compliance business systems and tools and any other systems or tools (e.g. Power BI, Navex IRM, Microsoft 365 apps) as they are developed and/or deployed in the region in partnership with Global Compliance Operations and other functional departments
  • Exchange with and support the Head of GRC/CCO EMEA on an 'as needed' basis, with the development of executive presentations, strategic planning, tactical planning, key performance indicator reporting, and budget management

What qualifications and skills are required?

  • An advanced university degree in Law, such as a Masters' Degree, LLM, J.D. or equivalent is required
  • Minimum of 10 years relevant post-qualification experience in the field of Law and Compliance is required, ideally through a combination of work for a top-tier law firm and in-house
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience of directly or laterally leading, managing and developing people is required
  • Strong ability to lead through influence, as well as authority with proven ability to work cross-functionally in an international context
  • Native-speaker level of English required, additional languages are a plus
  • Excellent written verbal and interpersonal communication skills
  • The ability to handle confidential and sensitive matters and work with a wide range of stakeholders, including employees at all levels, customers and third parties
  • Ability to travel domestically in UK/Ireland as required, as well as EMEA
