About the Role

We are seeking an experienced and dynamic professional to join our team as an Interim Head of Fire Safety. Reporting directly to the Service Director for Property, Facilities, and Health and Safety, you will collaborate closely with our corporate health and safety team, property compliance team, and external contractors.

In this pivotal role, you will lead the transformation of our approach to Fire Safety Management, ensuring compliance with the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 (RRO) and providing assurance to Senior Officers regarding their fire safety responsibilities.

Your expertise will be crucial in developing, implementing, and maintaining a transparent Fire Safety Management System in line with BS:9997. You will also be responsible for the provision of fire training and ensuring that fire risk assessments meet statutory requirements.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Develop a consistent and comprehensive fire safety policy and culture across the organization.
  • Ensure all records and reports meet fire safety legislative requirements, including reviewing the Fire Risk Management Strategy, fire safety policy, technical guidance, fire strategies, and the Contractors Fire Code.
  • Provide expert fire safety advice to all services within the organization.
  • Communicate complex information regarding fire safety legislation and associated guidance.
  • Audit and monitor life safety fire systems, training, inspections, and fire risk assessments.
  • Formulate, approve, and deliver fire safety training programs to meet statutory and mandatory requirements.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to develop and implement service changes and governance procedures to ensure compliance with statutory and mandatory requirements.
  • Work with the Emergency Planning and Corporate Health and Safety Teams, as well as external organizations, to develop and review fire emergency plans.
  • Advise on the interpretation of current and future government legislation and guidance regarding fire safety.
  • Conduct safety audits and contribute to reports on fire precautions within our premises.
  • Support the Property Compliance and Health and Safety teams.
  • Identify, assess, and manage fire risks outside of the Fire Risk Assessment program.
  • Monitor the maintenance of all firefighting equipment, signs, and notices, escalating any gaps as necessary.
  • Investigate fires in our premises in conjunction with local fire and police authorities and prepare fire reports.
  • Ensure contractors on our premises adhere to fire safety precautions.
  • Train staff in fire safety and evacuation procedures and maintain relevant training records.
  • Oversee the training schedules of ‘fire wardens’ to ensure their training needs are met.

About You

  • Active membership in the Institution of Fire Engineers or Institute of Fire Safety Managers.
  • A qualification in fire prevention or fire safety (e.g., NEBOSH National Certificate in Fire Safety and Risk Management and NEBOSH General Certificate, or an equivalent level 4 RQF accredited fire risk assessment).
  • Commitment to continuous professional development with comprehensive knowledge of fire legislation, building regulations, and fire precautions.
  • Demonstrable experience in strategic fire safety management at a senior level in a complex, multi-site organization.
  • Experience in planning and implementing fire prevention, protection, and intervention strategies.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, with the ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with stakeholders and colleagues.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, with the ability to produce detailed reports and determine effective solutions.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team, upholding values of equality, diversity, and inclusion.
